Week 5 Injury Report: The Calm After The Storm?

The NFL injuries have slowed down a bit this week, and I am not complaining! In case you missed any of the action, check out the research-backed timelines and fantasy impact below. All of the injuries from this week have been added to the injury tracker table you can find at the bottom of the article, which compiles return dates and perceived injury severity.

T.J. Hockenson

Injury: Concussion

Projected Return: Week 6-7

T.J. Hockenson had his head forced into the turf, exiting the game with a concussion. He will enter concussion protocol, which consists of making it through symptom-free daily activities, aerobic activities, non-contact practice, and eventually contact practice. The average return for NFL athletes is 15 days.

Will Shipley

Injury: Foot

Projected Return: TBD

While filling in for the injured Saquon Barkley, Will Shipley picked up a foot injury Sunday morning. He was dealing with a foot injury a few weeks ago, but it is currently unknown if this is a reaggravation of that same injury. It’s possible he’s dealing with a case of plantar fasciitis that has flared up, but we’ll wait for confirmation. If Shipley is unable to return in the coming weeks, Damien Pierce seems to be the back that the Eagles will lean on until Saquon is able to return.

KC Concepcion

Injury: Concussion

Projected Return: Week 6-7

KC Concepcion was on the receiving end of a brutal penalized hit, and likely will have to go through concussion protocol. Again, the average time missed for NFL players is about 15 days, though it is not out of the realm of possibility that he returns next week if he can clear all protocol steps.

TreVeyon Henderson

Injury: Ankle

Projected Return: TBD

TreVeyon Henderson was ruled out for the New England Patriots after a hard run where his ankle was grabbed by a Las Vegas Raiders defender. It looks like it is a high ankle sprain mechanism, and he had difficulty walking on the ankle afterwards. If confirmed as a high ankle sprain, this could rule him out for four or more weeks. If Henderson misses time, Rhamondre Stevenson will have an increased role in the Patriots’ offense.

David Montgomery

Injury: Groin

Projected Return: Week 6-9

After a fantastic start to the season in Week 1, David Montgomery has since struggled. It only got worse, as he picked up a groin injury and was unable to return to the game on Sunday. The official diagnosis is not confirmed, though this could be a groin strain. If so, it’s likely he will miss at least one to two weeks, with elevated re-injury risk the first game back. Woody Marks saw increased work with Montgomery’s absence.

Roman Wilson

Injury: Finger

Projected Return: TBD

After a contested catch and a tangle-up with a Colts defender, Roman Wilson was confirmed to have a dislocated finger. His hand was wrapped after the game. We will have to wait to see the severity of the damage, but this will likely see him miss some time. This injury comes at an unfortunate time for Wilson, as he seemed to finally be finding his feet in the league. With Michael Pittman Jr. on injured reserve, it makes Germie Bernard an intriguing option.

Tre' Harris

Injury: Hamstring

Projected Return: TBD

The injuries for the Los Angeles Chargers’ offense are only getting worse with Tre' Harris picking up a hamstring injury. If it is a strain, he will likely miss some time, with elevated re-injury risk in the first game back, which will gradually decrease each game he plays.

Deebo Samuel

Injury: Hamstring

Projected Return: TBD

Deebo Samuel hurt his hamstring during a play in which he fumbled the ball in the third quarter for the 49ers. Mike Evans will be even more of a focal point of the 49ers' passing game if Samuel misses time.

Kenyon Sadiq

Injury: Concussion

Projected Return: Week 6-7

Kenyon Sadiq was another player who suffered a concussion this week. He will also have to go through the steps of the concussion protocol in order to be able to play next week.
