Draft note
by John Paulsen
Hockenson was the No. 20 tight end by the time he was injured in Week 13 and 31% of his fantasy points came in Week 1 against the Cardinals (6-131-1). On the bright side, rookie tight ends usually don’t make much of a fantasy impact and he was one of 19 since the 2000 season to average at least 30 yards receiving per game. Not much has changed in Detroit, so Hockenson should compete with Danny Amendola to be the third option behind Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones.

DET TE T.J. Hockenson - 2020 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
During his first pro season T.J. Hockenson appeared in 12 games, registering 32 receptions for 367 yards and two scores. He is fully healed from his ankle injury that cost him the final month of his rookie campaign. In Week 1, he burst into the league with six grabs for 131 yards and a score. In his final game, on Thanksgiving, he posted another six-reception outing.

Fantasy Downside
After the huge first game Hockenson turned into a bit of a ghost, averaging just two receptions for 20 yards during the rest of his 11 contests. Regardless who was the Lions QB, he caught more than three passes only three times. Both of his TDs came in the first month.

Bottom Line
Tight ends tend to take some time before making an impact in the NFL, so don’t be too put off by Hockenson’s rookie stats. Now in his second season, he remains a solid weapon with his size, especially in the red zone. Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones will remain the top targets for Matthew Stafford but look for Hockenson to post better numbers in ’20. However, heading into the season he remains more of a TE2.
