Allen will now be the backup to Goff. The Lions were hoping Hooker would take over the QB2 duties, but it wasn't a good sign when Hooker played behind Allen in the final preseason game. Hooker is a former third round pick.

The Lions drafted quarterback Hendon Hooker in the third round in 2023, but through two NFL seasons Hooker has played only in garbage time, and late last season the Lions brought in veteran Teddy Bridgewater and put him ahead of Hooker on the depth chart to back up Jared Goff.

As the Lions open training camp this year, Bridgewater is no longer on the team and Hooker is competing with Kyle Allen to be the Lions’ No. 2 quarterback. Lions head coach Dan Campbell says it’s time for Hooker to take the next step in his career.

The story indicated the team could bring back Bridgewater, but that seems like it will only happen if Hooker doesn't take control of the QB2 job. There have been indications recently on X that Hooker has looked good, so if Goff owners are thinking about a handcuff, keep an eye on how Hooker progresses in camp.

Steelers WR Roman Wilson has been coming out of his shell at training camp. He stacked great days over the weekend, making his best catch as a pro on Sunday, and he seems to be developing some rapport with Fields and Kyle Allen.

The story said it hasn’t been a secret that Wilson didn’t have a great OTAs and minicamp with the Steelers. Wilson has a chance to win the Steelers WR2 role and likely just needs to pass Jefferson to do so. Austin, who was also listed in the story as a camp "winner" will be in the mix as well. Wilson is a third round pick from this past spring.

Last week Allen didn't practice on Wednesday [first full practice of the week]. In Week 10, he'll get a Denver Broncos defense that ranks 26th in QB aFPA.

Allen kept passes close to the line of scrimmage (6.2 aDOT) in Week 8, but that didn't keep him from completing 77.5% of his passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran seven times for 41 yards, with four of them coming on scrambles, so it must not have been too concerned about his shoulder. We'll keep an eye on his status, but it would be surprising if he didn't go Week 9.

The Texans are making another change at quarterback, going back to Davis Mills as their starter for Sunday’s road game against the Dallas Cowboys, according to league sources.

Allen had five turnovers (four interceptions and one lost fumble) in those games and accounted for two scores against the Texans in the defeat to Cleveland as a tipped pass was intercepted and returned for a touchdown and his lost fumble on a quarterback sneak was returned for a score, the story pointed out. Mills has 11 TD and 11 interceptions this season. It's safe to say, currently holding the top pick in the next NFL Draft, the Texans will likely address the QB position.

Reports said OC Pep Hamilton declined the change happened but others say it will be Allen under center in Week 12. Mills hasn't been good this year and it seems safe to assume the Texans will spend their high first round pick on a QB in this rich quarterback class in 2023.

During his Monday press conference, Texans’ HC Lovie Smith left the door open to a QB change this week, going away from Davis Mills to Kyle Allen. “We're not pleased with where we are,” Smith said. “Do we need to do some things differently? Yes, and we will.”

Saying that the Texans' offensive performance on Sunday was a hard watch would be an understatement. Mills was sacked five times and threw two interceptions, and running back Dameon Pierce ran the ball ten times for 0.8 yards per carry. If the quarterback change were to occur, Kyle Allen would inherit a terrible offensive line and a group of pass-catchers who have reiterated that they don't want to play for this team.
