WFT QB Kyle Allen has been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Taylor Heinicke (knee) is on track to start Week 15.

Washington quarterback Taylor Heinicke had to exit Sunday’s game with a knee injury, but at this point it still doesn’t sound serious.

Heinicke said after the game that his knee was fine and he should be ready to face the Eagles in Week 15. On Monday, head coach Ron Rivera told reporters in his press conference that Heinicke is sore and the team will monitor him over the course of the week. Allen replaced Heinicke in the fourth quarter and went 4-of-9 passing for 53 yards. Heinicke also played through an elbow issue on Sunday.

The Washington Football Team begins its bye week with a 2-6 record, a depleted roster, an underperforming defense and an offense with no identity. Changes are needed, but Coach Ron Rivera will keep one constant, at least for now: Taylor Heinicke.

Despite the team’s four-game slide and its inefficiency on offense, Rivera said Monday that he plans to stick with Heinicke as Washington’s starting quarterback.

Fitzpatrick is scheduled to get an MRI next week and there is a chance he could get cleared to return to practice, however playing in Week 10 could be a stretch. The WFT hosts Tampa Bay off the bye. Given Heinicke hasn't claimed a full grasp on the position, Fitz could have a chance to get back under center at some point. However, there doesn't seem to be any guarantee Fitzpatrick returns depending on the MRI results and it's also possible he's shut down for the remainder of the season. Allen is the current backup to Heinicke with Fitz on IR.

A report over the weekend indicated that Washington quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is not close to returning from the hip injury he suffered in Week 1 and head coach Ron Rivera confirmed that is the case on Monday.

Rivera told reporters at his press conference that Fitzpatrick will have an MRI to evaluate how his hip is recovering in two weeks. That will be eight weeks after he suffered the injury, which was the longer end of a six-to-eight week timeline that was reported at the time of his injury.

As the story said, should Fitzpatrick not be ready to resume football activities at that point, one imagines there will be some discussion about whether he’ll be able to return at all this season. If he can return, there is no guarantee he'll assume the starting job again. Heinicke has started at quarterback in Fitzpatrick’s absence.

Rivera feels Heinicke is showing improvement. That means Heinicke is set to make his sixth consecutive start Sunday at the Green Bay Packers. Heinicke was 24 of 39 for 172 yards, a touchdown and an interception in a 31-13 loss to Kansas City that dropped Washington to 2-4. Reports have said Fitzpatrick could come off IR this week after a hip injury, but there has been no update and there was no mention in this story.

It's essentially a dislocated hip. Rapoport said it could go a couple of different ways - it could be extremely serious where he doesn't play at all for the rest of this year, or it could be minor. But at the very least, Fitz is going to miss several weeks, so a stint on IR makes a lot of sense here. He went on to say the team will look inward first, meaning Heinicke and Allen will get the chances. It appears for now, bringing in Newton doesn't look to be on the table.

That's a big role, as the tweet went on to say. But Rivera would know the role well, coming from Carolina. He's compared Gibson to McCaffrey in the past so it may not be a big surprise. But as we learned last year, McKissic is very nice pass catching back who could ease some of that workload, and undrafted free agent Patterson has looked good as well. He was recently compared to Darren Sproles. But this is certainly good news for Gibson and his potential workload.

Washington QB Kyle Allen is expected to undergo surgery in the coming weeks on his dislocated ankle and small fracture, according to sources, jeopardizing his season.

Fowler went on to say the team won't know if Allen is out for the year until later, but it seems to be trending that way. The injury seems to be paving the way for Smith to potentially start the remainder of the season, according to sources. Haskins is also available but the team doesn't seem to want to go back to him. Smith is worth picking up in deeper leagues or in two-QB leagues for those in need at the position.

The initial diagnosis for Washington QB Kyle Allen's injury is a dislocated ankle and only a small fracture.

Still an unfortunate injury, but definitely better than what some may have originally thought, just based on seeing the injury live. So, fortunately, no compound fracture. Still, it's a significant injury. Alex Smith is now in at quarterback and likely will be going forward, perhaps for the rest of the season, unless Dwayne Haskins gets inserted back in at some point during the second half of the season.
