Streaming Quarterbacks: Week 5 Targets

Week 4 started off exactly as planned. A.J. Brown had two touchdowns. The Dolphins had a lead during the game against the Chargers. Players named Troymaine Pope, Ryquell Armstead, and Trevor Davis scored touchdowns. Tom Brady had fewer fantasy points than Josh Allen who threw three interceptions.

Who didn’t see this coming?

The regular season rollercoaster jerks us into a turn with wild performances from unknown players. Just about the only thing we could understand was Case Keenum getting benched in favor of Dwayne Haskins. Otherwise, there were key performances that left much to be desired. But Week 5 is already here. With only the Lions and Dolphins on bye, our waiver wire options aren’t limited (yet) so we’ll step through the process yet again to capitalize on some key matchups.

Week 4 Review

Let’s take a quick look at last week’s picks for any adjustments to the process.

Two up, two down. We’ll take Brissett’s fantasy total, but the logic to play him was flawed with T.Y. Hilton missing practice all week and ultimately being inactive. Daniel Jones’ day was stifled by game script. Kyle Allen met J.J. Watt. The recommendations averaged a QB17 finish buoyed by a couple of strong performances. However, we missed on Matthew Stafford. His ownership pushed him out of top consideration, but close enough for an honorable mention. Detroit did enter Week 4 with the 11th-worst passing rate, but Kansas City has had the 9th-most pass attempts against them due to their Top-5 scoring offense. It increases the risk of turnovers (fumbles, interceptions), but the reward (23.4 fantasy points, QB4) can sometimes be worth the risk. We’ll look for similar matchups against the Chiefs in the future.

Adjusted Fantasy Points Allowed

Next, let’s visit 4for4’s Schedule-Adjusted Fantasy Points Allowed updated as we head into Week 5. Notable rankings for defensive units include:

  • JAX falls 11 spots to #14 (16.3 aFPA)
  • LAR falls 10 spots to #11 (15.1 aFPA)
  • HOU jumps 8 spots to #20 (18 aFPA)
  • CLE jumps 12 spots to #15 (16.7 aFPA)

Key Defensive Injuries

Finally, we’ll review injuries along with the guidelines that will be used each week to find viable options on the waiver wire:

  • Only quarterbacks with no more than a 45% ownership in Yahoo leagues considered.
  • Ancillary metrics and game conditions (e.g. defensive ranking, weather) will be factored into the analysis.
  • Positive matchups for all pass catchers to be considered.
  • 4for4 rankings should always be consulted for league-specific decisions.

Melvin Ingram (Chargers, Hamstring) – Ingram suffered a hamstring pull in the second quarter that kept him sidelined for the rest of the game. The Chargers (17.1 aFPA) have already lost a significant amount of talent on defense making their Week 5 matchup against Denver interesting for the Broncos. Coach Anthony Lynn was unable to provide an update on Ingram’s availability for next week’s matchup.

Marcus Peters (Rams, Concussion) – The five-year veteran was hit on his pick-six return from Jameis Winston. Peters was clearly hurt while underneath the dogpile of his teammates and didn’t return. Unfortunately, the Rams (15.1 aFPA) are set to travel to Seattle on Thursday to kick off Week 5. Peters will need to clear the league’s concussion protocol in order to suit up on a short week.

Other Notable Injuries: Denzel Perryman (Chargers, Concussion), Ryan Connelly (Giants, Knee), Ryan Anderson (Washington, Elbow), Trey Hendrickson (Saints, Neck)
