Team news: New York Jets

After a strong offseason, Reynolds is the clear-cut leader for the WR2 job. He arrived with little fanfare as a free agent (one year, $2.8 million), mainly because of a down 2024 with the Broncos and Jaguars. It also was a turbulent year; he suffered arm and head wounds in a shooting.

New Jets coach Aaron Glenn knows Reynolds from their time in Detroit, where the 30-year-old receiver was a solid complementary option. Beyond Garrett Wilson, the Jets lack big-play ability after cutting Davante Adams. Reynolds has separated from Allen Lazard and others.

This seems a little surprising, until you look at the rest of the depth chart, that is. With Justin Fields at the helm, we should expect a very run-heavy offense in New York, and even if he loses the job, we would expect more of the same from Tyrod Taylor. Reynolds makes for an interesting stacking partner with Fields, though he's much closer to a fantasy WR5 than a WR2.

The Jets are signing FA WR Josh Reynolds today, sources say, and he gets a 1-year deal worth up to $5M.

Reynolds played for the Broncos last year, and GM Darren Mougey is more than familiar. Also recently spent time with the Jaguars, Lions and Titans.

Not much fantasy value hiding here, though it is a nice depth piece for Justin Fields or a prospective rookie signal caller.

The Jets are signing QB Justin Fields, as Gang Green gets a new starter. Fields says goodbye to Pittsburgh after 1 year.

He gets a 2-year deal worth $40M with $30M guaranteed in deal.

We'll see if this pushes Pittsburgh to bring Wilson back, but for now, New York will move forward with a 26-year-old in a new home. The Jets will likely look to move the ball on the ground as much as possible, but it's not as if that's not what the Steelers were doing in '24. A full year as a starter puts Fields in legitimate QB1 conversation, with Garrett Wilson contributing to his floor.

The Jets are cutting WR Davante Adams, per source.

Unable to find a trade partner for the 3x All-Pro, New York is moving on and freeing up almost $30M in cap space.

Adams played in 11 games for the 5-12 Jets, and it looks like he could end up joining Aaron Rodgers somewhere else in 2025. Lazard is also almost guaranteed to be playing elsewhere next season, as New York will try to regroup under new head coach Aaron Glenn.

On Tuesday, Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich said that Aaron Rodgers is uncertain to play against the Bills as a result. Ulbrich added that he would bet on Rodgers being in the lineup, however.

Rodgers hurt his knee against the Rams last Sunday and Taylor was seen warming up on the sideline while Rodgers got medical attention, but Rodgers remained on the field for the entirety of the 19-9 loss that dropped the Jets to 4-11 for the season, the story said. Those counting on him will want to monitor his status but it looks like he at least has a chance to go in Week 17, which is in the early slate of games on Sunday.

Rookie WR Malachi Corley was active yesterday, but did not get in the game. Ulbrich's explanation:

Corley has made "major improvement in maturity, but at the same time, (he) still has a ways to go. Still has a ways to go from an offensive perspective. And as we all know, if you're going to be the fourth receiver -- because of the talent within that room -- you have to find a significant role on special teams."

It's not a great sign for Corley, as the trend is rookie WRs need to make impacts in their first season to have it translate to a valuable fantasy career. At this point, Corley is probably only a household name in the dynasty community. As Cimini pointed out in his post, the Jets traded up to take him at the top of the 3rd round. Cimini also wondered if the coaching staff doesn't think he's ready from a maturity standpoint, what did they miss in the pre-draft evaluation process?

The weather wasn't the only thing frigid on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. So was the on-field relationship between New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver Garrett Wilson, who was targeted only three times over the first 55 minutes and spoke cryptically afterward about why he wasn't a factor in the 19-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

"I'd like to be involved, love to make an impact on the game, but people see it differently," Wilson said. "That's out of my control."

Wilson had only been targeted five times over five quarters heading into the final frame in Week 16. In the same span, Adams was targeted 17 times. Even Allen Lazard (seven) had more chances than Wilson, who ranted during last week's win because he wanted the ball against single coverage on a specific red zone play, the story said. Wilson did finish with a 6-54-0 line after four late receptions. There should be lots of changes coming to the Jets for the 2025 season, but the story speculated Wilson could ask for a trade if the trend continues. The Jets and their offense will be one of the bigger stories to follow this offseason.

The Steelers ruled out WR George Pickens and QB Justin Fields for Saturday vs. Baltimore.

OLB T.J. Watt (ankle) is off the injury report and will play.

We really can't trust any of these ancillary pieces with Pickens missing, and it comes as a huge downgrade to Russell Wilson and the offense, in general.

The Chargers plan to activate TE Hayden Hurst from Injured Reserve to play in tonight’s game against the Broncos, source says.

Hurst went on IR with a hip injury in late November, but he’s practiced fully since having his window opened this week.

This puts a bit of a damper on Smartt as a streaming option in Week 16, as he should lose a little bit of usage to the vet. When (if) Dissly returns, he will likely also be off the radar as the situation gets a little too clogged up.

Jeff Ulbrich says RB Breece Hall is "looking good" to play Sunday for the Jets.

They are "hopeful" for CB D.J. Reed. CB Brandin Echols is doubtful.

KR/RB Kene Nwangwu will be put on IR with a broken hand.

This comes as quite a bit of a surprise and could easily mean he plays in a limited role, which really muddies up the whole situation. If that's the case, this backfield may be an entire avoid with no bye weeks in the first round of Fantasy Playoffs, with Hall falling somewhere in the RB2-RB3 range.
