6 Fantasy Football Wide Receivers Primed to Break Out in 2026

Everyone wants the next big thing in fantasy football. Especially when it comes to wide receivers and the huge spike weeks they can provide, finding an undervalued player at their multi-site average draft position (ADP) can sometimes be the difference between winning and losing a league.

Anyone can draft Ja'Marr Chase or Puka Nacua in the first round. The problem we want to solve in this column is how we can identify the players who could be in that high draft spot a year from now (or far outpace their ADP), and how we can identify the best candidates to break out in 2026.

Several things can determine a breakout’s candidacy. We can evaluate air yards, target share, snap share, and any number of traditional and advanced metrics. But what are the key drivers in determining a breakout?

Our own Ryan Noonan identified several breakout indicators in this piece three years ago, and they are a valuable tool for looking at what players might jump from good to great or from great to ultra-elite.

Frequent breakout indicators

  • A strong finish to end the year prior. Players who end the year on a high statistical note will often carry that success into the upcoming season.
  • Lack of an established No. 1 target at wide receiver. No true alpha on a team opens the door for a breakout star to step in and claim the throne.
  • Vacated targets or vacated roles from players who have departed. If a player is on a team with a sudden volume of open opportunities following the departure of a big-name player, their path to a breakout season is much easier.
  • Strong draft/athletic pedigree. The NFL Draft evaluation process and scouting are also far from exact sciences, but the draft capital a team spends on a player, along with that player's athletic profile, can sometimes indicate future success.

Wide receiver breakouts in 2025

  • Jaxon Smith-Njigba - Already a star wide receiver, JSN became an elite, mega-star and a first-round fantasy football pick with 1,793 yards and 10 touchdowns on the way to a Super Bowl win.
  • George Pickens - Taking advantage of CeeDee Lamb missing some time, George Pickens became Dak Prescott's favorite target and finished with 93 catches, 1,429 yards, and nine touchdowns. Pickens was finally able to shed the boom-or-bust tag in 2025.
  • Alec Pierce - Pierce was always a dangerous downfield weapon, but Keenan Allen's absence and Daniel Jones' career year before his injury led to a massive breakout for the outside receiver. Pierce had 21.3 yards per reception and 1,003 yards on 83 targets.
  • Quentin Johnston - Johnston looked like a major bust through two years, with major problems in drops and route-running. But 2025 was a breakout for Johnston, as he amassed 735 yards and eight touchdowns in 14 games. He was 11th in the NFL in touchdown receptions.

2026 Wide Receiver Breakout Candidates

Carnell Tate, Titans

ADP (Positional Rank): 6.06 (WR31)

Carnell Tate has an appealing breakout profile and the draft capital to help get him there. Tate was selected fourth overall in the spring by the Titans after catching 51 passes for 875 yards and six touchdowns, with 17.2 yards per catch. He was third among all NCAA receivers with 3.06 yards per route run in 2025 as well.

Tate is an efficient wide receiver, especially after the catch. That will be helpful considering Cam Ward was not the most efficient quarterback in 2025; in fact, he was one of the worst quarterbacks in the league in 2025. But he did lack a true number one wide receiver, and Carnell Tate is here to fill that role. Tate can get there on volume. He can get there on efficiency, and as a player being taken around the time you are filling your Flex, his draft cost is not too high to find out what he can do.

KC Concepcion, Browns

ADP (Positional Rank): 11.04 (WR51)

KC Concepcion is another hot rookie coming into the league who is starting to get a lot of buzz for his skills and his diversity while on the field. He has demonstrated the ability to produce at a high level against the best competition. At Texas A&M, Concepcion finished 2025 with 61 receptions for 919 yards, nine touchdowns, and 15.1 yards per reception. In his first preseason action, we also saw him score a fantastic rushing touchdown, dodging multiple defenders along the way.

Concepcion can clearly emerge as the Browns' number one receiver against competition like fellow rookie Denzel Boston and washed-up Jerry Jeudy. If Cleveland can get even decent quarterback play in 2026, Concepcion is likely to be the biggest beneficiary. He is an explosive play waiting to happen, and the Browns have been missing that kind of weapon for years.
