Wells playing way into starter talks

When training camp opened, and even after RB Chris Wells signed his lucrative contract a few days later, Cardinals HC Whisenhunt said second-year back Tim Hightower was the clear starter. But after Friday's game against the Packers, in which Wells busted a few big runs on his way to two touchdowns and 46 yards on seven carries, there could be a change of heart.

"I was just angry (Monday), and I said a lot of things," Whisenhunt said. "But you know, we're always going to have competition at positions, and the best players are going to play."

Whisenhunt has been thoroughly pleased with Hightower, but now that Wells appears healthy - and Wells said he was less than 100 percent against the Packers - there's no telling how the carries will be distributed for a team that last season, ranked last in the NFL in rushing.

"I would never rule it out," Whisenhunt said of Wells becoming the starter, "because you never know what can happen."
