Former Pro Bowl TE Jordan Reed is retiring, sources say. A 2013 3rd-round pick by the Washington Football Team, Reed emerged as one of the game’s best receiving TEs before battling injuries. His improbable comeback with #49ers last season allowed him to walk away with no regrets.
Reed battled injuries but was one of the league's best when healthy. He put up 3,602 yards and 28 touchdowns between his time in Washington and last year with the 49ers.
They referred to him as an RB but Cordarrelle Patterson's main contributions have come on special teams as a returner. It will be interesting to see how Atlanta plans to use the 30-year old this season. He's not currently on the fantasy radar aside from leagues with return points.
The @AZCardinals continued to pick up veteran free agents as they have signed former Steelers RB @JamesConner_ one day after he flew in for a visit.
This signing certainly takes some of the wind out of Chase Edmonds' sails. Conner has missed 12 games over the last three seasons, but when he's been healthy, he's been effective, averaging 4.0-4.5 YPC and averaging at least 71.5 total yards per game in each of the last three seasons. He's a dual-threat, soon-to-be 26-year-old back who is still in his prime. We'll see if he'll have a shot at the starting job, but at a minimum, he's going to be a headache for Edmonds' owners.
The #Patriots have terminated the contract of WR Julian Edelman, per the wire. He’s listed as a failed physical.
The Edelman era is over in New England. This is probably good news for the plethora of new pass-catchers that the Patriots acquired in free agency, including Nelson Agholor, Hunter Henry, Jonnu Smith and Kendrick Bourne. As a free agent, Edelman probably doesn't have much gas left in the tank if he's failing physicals, but we'll see where he lands.
Veteran RB Giovani Bernard is signing a one-year deal with the #Bucs, per source.
Tom Brady and Bruce Arians both personally recruited Bernard, one of the NFL’s best receiving backs, after his release from Cincinnati. Another weapon for Brady and the Super Bowl champs.
It's been a while since we've had a fantasy-relevant signing, but this one qualifies. Tom Brady has potentially found his James White 2.0. Bernard is a good pass-catcher, so he'll eat into Leonard Fournette and Ronald Jones's snaps on third down. This backfield is going to be tough to predict again in 2021.
Filed to ESPN: Jets trading QB Sam Darnold to the Carolina Panthers for a 2021 sixth-round pick and second- and fourth-round picks in 2022, per sources.
Sam Darnold will compete with Teddy Bridgewater in Carolina. There is plenty of fantasy-relevant talent on the Panthers' offense for either guy to throw to. Darnold's best season came in 2019 when he threw for 3,024 yards, 19 touchdowns and 13 interceptions with a receiving corps consisting of Jamison Crowder, Robby Anderson and an over-the-hill Demaryius Thomas, though Adam Gase was running the offense. Darnold be reunited with Anderson in Carolina and D.J. Moore will be the best receiver that Darnold has thrown to since entering the NFL. We have seen Ryan Tannehill thrive after parting ways with Gase--is Darnold the next reclamation project?
