Draft note
by John Paulsen
Sutton finished with 1,112 yards and six touchdowns on 72 receptions, but his numbers with Drew Lock (4.4-56-0.40) were not as good as his numbers with Joe Flacco (4.5-76-0.36), and that’s some reason for concern. If Lock improves, Sutton will represent a good value in the 4th/5th round, though he’ll now have to compete with Jerry Jeudy and K.J. Hamler for targets.

DEN WR Courtland Sutton - 2020 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
In his second professional season, Courtland Sutton led the Broncos with 72 receptions for 1,100 yards and six TDs. He became the 20th WR in the past 10 years to eclipse 1,100 yards in one of his first two professional seasons. After Emmanuel Sanders was traded in the middle of last year, Sutton took over as the Broncos No. 1 WR and will be Drew Lock’s top option in ’20, with rookies Jerry Jeudy and K.J. Hamler expected to be the other starters. With Lock under center for the final five contests, Sutton averaged slightly over four grabs for 56 yards and scored twice.

Fantasy Downside
While the passing game will feature Sutton, the speed presence of Jeudy and Hamler and RBs Melvin Gordon and Phillip Lindsay will all be utilized by Lock. Jeudy, the first-round pick, is a better prospect coming out of college than Sutton was and could take over the top target as the season progresses. Once Sanders was moved, Sutton had very little competition for targets, something that will absolutely change this year. Although he received over 120 looks last year, he was over the century mark only twice and failed to find the end zone during the final four contests.

Bottom Line
Sutton has good height at 6’4” and long arms, which helps him both be able to leap over and outstretch smaller DBs. Despite only two years in the league, the 24-year-old is the Broncos veteran WR heading into the regular season. With a new OC in Pat Shurmur, look for the Denver offense to be more exciting, resulting in another 1,000-yard year for Sutton. We have him as a top-30 WR heading into the regular season.
