Chargers Beat: Team to rely heavily on WR Keenan Allen

Monday, July 2, 2018, 8:44am

ESPN - [Full Article]

With tight end Hunter Henry out for the year after suffering a season-ending knee injury during offseason work, the Chargers will rely even more on Keenan Allen to make things happen in critical situations, such as on third down and in the red zone.

Fantasy Impact:

The story said the engine for the Chargers last year was already Allen, who had 102 catches for 1,393 yards. Over the final 12 games, the Bolts won nine of those contests with Allen going over 100 yards in five of those games. We have Allen ranked as our No. 6 WR as we head into camps.

Chargers expect big year from WR Mike Williams

Monday, June 25, 2018, 7:42pm

Pro Football Talk - [Full Article]

Mike Williams has called his rookie season a “bad year.” No one will argue with that.

The Chargers receiver dealt with a nagging back injury all year, finishing with only 11 catches in 10 games.

“This is a big year for Mike,” receivers coach Phil McGeoghan said, via Ricky Henne of the team website. “Obviously, everyone evaluated him at the combine when he was coming out. He was an unbelievable talent. I tell all the young guys that the biggest year in their whole career is between their first and second year."

Fantasy Impact:

McGeoghan went on to say Williams has been phenomenal in the team's room and everyone feels responsible to help him improve and get him up and running. The story said everyone with the team vows the real Williams will show up this season.

Chargers TE Virgil Green to get opportunity

Tuesday, June 12, 2018, 9:21pm

National Football Post - [Full Article]

Hunter Henry sustained a torn ACL in practice last month, leaving Virgil Green as the only tight end on the roster that has caught a pass in an NFL game and drastically changing his role for the upcoming season. Green, who signed with the Chargers as a free agent in March after playing seven seasons for the Denver Broncos, had been expected to serve mainly as a blocking complement to Henry.

Instead, Green might finally get his chance to be used more in the passing game, especially in the red zone. It was how Green was expected to be featured coming out of college at Nevada, but he never caught more than 22 passes in a season, with 48 of his 71 career receptions coming in the past three seasons.

Fantasy Impact:

The story added the Bolts are expected to use more three-WR sets, and we had a story recently about RB Melvin Gordon possibly getting more involved in the passing game. It's certainly no lock Green sees the kind of workload Henry was supposed to see.

Bolts RB Melvin Gordon could see more catches

Monday, June 11, 2018, 9:54am

Pro Football Talk - [Full Article]

The loss of tight end Hunter Henry to a torn ACL has led to questions about whether the Chargers will bring Antonio Gates back for another season to bolster their passing offense.

They have resisted such a move to this point and part of the reason may be their confidence in running back Melvin Gordon.

Fantasy Impact:

Gordon only caught 22 passes during his time at the University of Wisconsin, but had 74 in his first two NFL seasons before moving up to 58 catches last season in a progression that has offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt pointing to the running back as part of the solution to Henry’s absence, the story said. We already have Gordon ranked seventh in PPR formats, but he may have huge fantasy value if you can get him early in the second, as ADPs currently indicate.

Lions RB Kerryon Johnson 'three-down player' but maybe not 'early in his career'

Saturday, June 2, 2018, 4:42pm

Detroit Free Press - [Full Article]

Lions running backs coach David Walker this week described second-round pick RB Kerryon Johnson as a "three-down player.”

However, the Lions would like to believe they’re in a spot where they don’t have to use Johnson as an every-down workhorse this early in his career.

NFL teams have traded up for just five running backs in the first three rounds of the last four drafts: Melvin Gordon, Kareem Hunt, Alvin Kamara, Dalvin Cook, and Johnson.

Fantasy Impact:

It should be noted it was easier to forecast early volume as rookies for Gordon and Hunt, due to a lack of competition in the backfield at the time. However, at this point last offseason, there was certainly ambiguity in the backfields of Kamara on the Saints and Cook on the Vikings, for Cook at least until mid-to-late August. That type of ambiguity in the backfield can lead to discounts in fantasy drafts, where Johnson is currently being drafted in the eighth round or later. Detroit aggressively traded up for him, using premium draft capital in an offseason where they are looking to overhaul their running game.

Chargers TE Hunter Henry suffers season-ending injury (torn ACL)

Tuesday, May 22, 2018, 9:50pm

Adam Schefter - [Full Article]

Damn. Adam Schefter tweeted late Tuesday night that Los Angeles Chargers tight end Hunter Henry suffered what is believed to be a season-ending torn ACL during a drill. The team plans to get a second opinion Wednesday.

Fantasy Impact:

It’s a tough blow to Henry in what was set to be his breakout season. The Chargers signed Virgil Green to replace Antonio Gates, but may bring back Gates for another season in light of this news. Gates played limited snaps (47%) last year en route to 30 catches for 316 yards and 3 touchdowns. He would be a streaming option if he’s playing starter-type snaps (70%+).

Packers hire Mike Pettine as defensive coordinator

Wednesday, January 10, 2018, 10:16am

Packers News - [Full Article]

Mike McCarthy’s search to fill his vacant defensive coordinator’s job ended suddenly after nine days when the Green Bay Packers coach chose former Cleveland Browns coach Mike Pettine to succeed Dom Capers.

Pettine, 51, was out of football in 2016 after compiling a 10-22 record in two seasons as coach of the Cleveland Browns and spent this past season as a defensive consultant with the Seattle Seahawks.

McCarthy had interest in Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, but it appears Fangio is going to stick with the Bears. He also asked for permission to speak with Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, but never got to interview him. Bradley agreed to return to the Chargers Tuesday night.

Along the way to his head-coaching job, Pettine was part of some of the NFL’s top defenses. From ’09-12, the Jets ranked 1st, 3rd, 5th and 8th in overall defense. Ryan received most of the credit for the Jets’ great defenses, but a Cleveland.com story said that Ryan turned over much of the responsibility of the defense to Pettine after the 2009 season.

In 2013, after Pettine went to Buffalo, the Bills ranked 10th in defense.

Fantasy Impact:

As the story mentioned, Pettine's defenses in New York and Buffalo all ranked top 10 in yards allowed, though they were 20th in points allowed in three straight seasons (two in New York and one in Buffalo). There may be some growing pains along the way, but this looks like a good hire for Green Bay.

Raiders fire Jack Del Rio

Monday, January 1, 2018, 9:21am

NFL.com - [Full Article]

At this time a year ago, the Oakland Raiders were cheering the end of their playoff drought. Now, they're in the market for a new head coach.

Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio announced after the Raiders' 30-10 loss to the Chargers that owner Mark Davis had informed him that he had been fired.

"We appreciate Jack's effort in building the foundation of this team for the future," Davis said in a statement released by the team. "Thank you to Jack, his wife, Linda, and his daughter, Aubrey, for their important contributions to the Raiders and our local community in Oakland. We wish them all the best."

Fantasy Impact:

Ian Rapoport reported the Raiders are pushing hard for Jon Gruden to come out of the Monday Night Football booth to coach again. The team once traded Gruden to Tampa Bay, where he won a Super Bowl.

Chargers RB Melvin Gordon will play Week 17

Sunday, December 31, 2017, 3:35pm

Chargers Inactives
Jeremiah Attaochu DE
Geremy Davis WR
Russell Hansbrough RB
Cardale Jones QB
Corey Liuget DE
Michael Ola OT
Adrian Phillips FS

Related players: Melvin Gordon

Fantasy Impact:

It's a must-win for the Chargers so Gordon will go today but likely isn't 100% with the ankle injury. Branden Oliver and Austin Ekeler could see a bump in production if the Bolts are going to try to limit Gordon in any way.

Friday, December 29, 2017, 6:01pm

Chargers TE Antonio Gates (illness) returned to take full practice reps Friday after missing practice Thursday. Gates was a great Sneaky Start last week and we like him again in a solid matchup against the Raiders.

Friday, December 29, 2017, 6:01pm

Chargers TE Jeff Cumberland (illness) took full practice reps again Friday.

Friday, December 29, 2017, 6:01pm

Raiders TE Jared Cook (wrist) took full practice reps on Friday after being limited earlier in the week. Cook should be out there against the Chargers.

Friday, December 29, 2017, 6:01pm

Raiders WR Amari Cooper (ankle) took full practice reps on Friday after being limited earlier in the week. Cooper will play against Casey Hayward and the Chargers.

Friday, December 29, 2017, 6:01pm

Chargers RB Melvin Gordon (ankle, questionable) took limited practice reps again Friday and is questionable for Week 17. The Chargers need a win, so Gordon will likely give it a go in a great matchup against the Raiders.

Friday, December 29, 2017, 6:01pm

Chargers RB Austin Ekeler (hand) took full practice reps all week. Ekeler didn’t see any snaps last week, so his role is up in the air right now.
