The Patriots are placing RB Ty Montgomery on IR. WR Lil’Jordan Humphrey will be signed to the 53-man roster.

Montgomery, who injured his right knee Aug. 26 and surprisingly was active for the season opener Sept. 11, will miss at least four games by going on IR. Montgomery actually scored the team’s lone TD on Sunday as part of their three man RB rotation and played 21 snaps. More passing down snaps should now go to Stevenson and he should continue to be the back to own in an always-muddled Patriot running game.

Bill Belichick said this morning on The Greg Hill Show that every Patriots player except Tyquan Thornton, who's on IR, "should have a shot" to play Sunday vs. Miami.

That includes Ty Montgomery and Isaiah Wynn, who are dealing with injuries.

"Hopefully they'll all make it."

It's a situation to watch heading into Week 1. If Monty is active and plays, it would most likely cut into Stevenson's fantasy production in the passing game and perhaps two minute drills. Montgomery is a risky play because of his limited role though.

The Pats are pretty deep at RB but those in dynasty leagues were hoping Harris had a path to more work in the near future. With Strong getting picked a couple of round earlier, he makes the cut with the injured Montgomery, and of course the two at the top of the depth chart - Damien Harris and Stevenson.

Ty Montgomery looks like the early favorite to take over James White's passing-down role, but that might just be the jumping off point with the veteran. His diverse skillset could open up even more options for the coaching staff to experiment with.

If you've been following the news here today, this isn't a surprise. Monty has been getting the snaps in the two-minute drills and was also playing a big part in the offense during that time. Montgomery has played in the NFL as a receiver and a running back so the fit seems to be a pretty good one. Stevenson had also been getting some time in the James White role, so those snaps going to Montgomery will put a bit of a damper on Stevenson's fantasy value. This could be one of those typical Patriot running back situations where no one really knows how it will pan out week-to-week.

One other note: when the Patriots starting offense went into hurry up mode, Ty Montgomery was once again the RB on the field.

Stevenson was also getting time in the "James White role" we reported today, but since then the team seems like it's giving Montgomery his chance to take the role. The tweet said Monty was left open down the right sideline for a big gain and also caught a check down on the drive. Lazar added his versatility to line up at WR is an added bonus. Keep in mind, Montgomery used to play WR before making the switch to RB. He was really last fantasy relevant back in 2016 and 2017 with the Packers but the Patriots seem to be able to revive players and Montgomery is a nature fit for the passing down and hurry-up role.

Stevenson has been in the role from the start of camp, according to reports. One can concluded it's looking more and more like he could split the work with Harris, much like he did last year, but also earn the targets. That would make him a better fantasy value than Harris.

The same hip injury that recently forced Ryan Fitzpatrick into retirement has sadly done the same to pass-catching specialist James White.

One of —if not the— best pass-catching running backs of his generation, White will hang up the cleats at 30 years old. In his steed, it clears the way for Stevenson to continue working on third downs, while dark horse veteran Ty Montgomery could find himself with a bigger workload than we would have imagined when he signed with the team.

It may be time to cool the hype train on Rhamondre Stevenson, as this would severely hinder his fantasy upside as it was believed he may be the one operating as the receiving back on the New England carousel.

It's possible he remains on PUP to start the season, but the Patriots still have a few more weeks to evaluate his recovery and decide if he's ready to practice before the end of preseason, the tweet went on to say. Stevenson, at least early on in camp, had been the target of a lot of passes, according to reports, so he could potentially take over White's role. The Patriots, just this week, complimented Montgomery, as a player who can do a little bit of everything.

Patriots beat reporter Andrew Callahan has Stevenson down for six catches on seven targets, tied with wide receiver DeVante Parker (5-of-7).

It's obviously early, but the drum beat continues for Stevenson, who could not only usurp the third down role but also still some early round work from Damien Harris if everything falls right. Of 50 qualifying running backs (min. 100 carries) in 2021, Stevenson ranked sixth in yards after contact/attempt (3.1) and seventh in broken-plus-missed tackles (18.8%), while Harris ranked 30th and 25th respectively in those two categories.
