Perfect Fantasy Football Draft: 6th in a 10-Team Yahoo Half-PPR League

I’m 131 best ball drafts deep at the moment. That’s much less a brag than it is an admission. But the context that I have coming into my home league draft stems from best ball. Where yes, I do have the sixth pick in my 10-team Yahoo league, but luckily, I know my league mates can’t read. So, when I start to prep for my home league draft, my first instinct is to compare Yahoo’s ADP to that of Underdog. It’s a different game, and as we get better at best ball, the two continue to diverge, but it’s still the best way for me to quickly understand Yahoo’s draft landscape.

And when you compare the two ADP sets, the differences are obvious. A wide receiver is the top value on Yahoo when sorting by Underdog ADP in 14 out of 16 rounds. The other two values are Brock Bowers in Round 3 and Tyler Warren in Round 15. Underdog drafters are sickos for WRs. And the other callout is that rookies are the top value in three of the 16 rounds. These are positions and archetypes that are available to us later that can open up things for us earlier in the draft.

My Plan of Attack When Drafting 6th in a 10-Team Half-PPR League

Roster Settings: 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 FLEX (WR/RB/TE), 1 Kicker, 1 DEF, seven bench spots

As the name of the article implies, we’re searching for perfection. Or as near to it as we can get. In a shallow home league, my goal is to pay up for elite players at the QB and TE positions. The ability for those players to differentiate themselves from the rest of the pack is even more critical in leagues where there is a lot of depth at RB and WR. This year, I see four elite QBs in Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Jayden Daniels, and Jalen Hurts. Their combination of rushing and passing creates both a floor and a predictable ceiling that are difficult for pure pocket passers to reach. And we have three elite TEs in Brock Bowers, Trey McBride, and George Kittle.

In a perfect draft like we’re shooting for, I’m getting both one of those four QBs and one of those three TEs. And I’m banking on my ability to beat my league mates in selecting RBs and WRs throughout the draft. However, in my Most Predictable Wide Receiver Stat article, I found that there were five WRs that really differentiate themselves at the top of the draft. They are Ja'Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson, CeeDee Lamb, Puka Nacua, and Malik Nabers. With Matthew Stafford’s back issues really starting to spook the market, we can remove Nacua from our Round 1 discussion.

The graph below shows the projected points by positional rank split between RBs and WRs. You’ll notice the alien Chase in the top-left and then the other four names I listed projected at or above the top-five RBs. And then there is a large span of players where the RBs project better than the WRs, up to about positional rank 20. And so, I really want one of those four names in Round 1 before switching to an RB like De'Von Achane in Round 2. All in, I’d ideally have a rainbow start of one QB, one RB, one WR, and one TE through four rounds. This is a bet on yourself that you can catch up at WR later in the draft. It’s risky, but we’re chasing perfection.
