Dak Prescott is set to have surgery on his fractured right thumb today, which could keep him out until their Bye Week, which takes place in mid-November.

It would seem that the shortest possible timetable would have him returning on October 24th, which is right before the team's bye week. Cooper Rush will take over at quarterback and extend his five career starts this weekend against the Bengals. The Cowboys scored three points in their Week 1 loss against the Buccaneers, with Prescott at the helm for most of the game.

Jerry Jones made the announcement after Sunday’s loss to the Buccaneers. Prescott left the game in the fourth quarter and was replaced by Cooper Rush. The offense as whole struggled against Tampa and that was with Dak Prescott. So you have to believe the offensive value takes a good hit with Rush at quarterback. The offensive line also didn’t help. It may be tough sledding going forward for the Cowboys, who host the Bengals next week.

While Michael Gallup still isn't expected to suit up on Sunday for the Buccaneers facing off against his Cowboys, this is a step in the right direction.

Rookie Jalen Tolbert has an opportunity to work as the team's WR2, and third passing-game option behind CeeDee Lamb and TE Dalton Schultz. Owner Jerry Jones said last week that he believes Gallup will be ready to go sometime in the first three weeks of the season.

The Cowboys are keeping one QB on the 53-man roster for the time being: Dak Prescott. Cooper Rush and Will Grier have been released, according to sources. Rush does not go through waivers; Grier does. Likely both will be back in some form – PS or active - to serve as backup.

Archer went on to say this is nothing to be alarmed about for Cowboy fans or maybe even for those who backed up Prescott on dynasty rosters. Archer added, "it's roster manipulation at the moment to be prepared for moves to come over the next few days. They can have a wink-wink deal with Rush since he's a vested vet. After recording zero catches his rookie season in Dallas, WR Simi Fehoko has spent the offseason in Dallas. He has spent time with Dak Prescott and feels he offers something that the WR room may lack due to offseason moves and injuries. "Being the bigger, taller and I guess heavier receiver to be able to have that blend of speed I feel like adding that with learning from the route runner from [Noah Brown] or CeeDee, I feel like it's only just going to get better," Fehoko said. "I feel like that is something I bring to the table."

"I ended up staying here and I was able to work with Dak a little bit through the offseason," Fehoko said. "It's been smooth for me just being able to deal with them and be here the whole offseason."

Fehoko has a leg-up on rookies such as Jalen Tolbert by being in the Cowboys system for a season, but if he wants to be irreplaceable he has to top players with higher draft capital (Tolbert) and force out veterans such as James Washington. Fehoko could be an intriguing dynasty player if his time in Dallas bares fruit.

Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine that QB Dak Prescott had surgery on his left shoulder at the beginning of the offseason. McCarthy has "no concern" about Prescott being available for offseason workouts.

Despite not missing as much time as his season-ending injury in 2020, Prescott was hampered by the shoulder injury in 2021 and it altered his play. More on this as offseason workouts happen.

Prescott was expected to be limited and did what was asked, a good sign heading towards Friday. Cooper and Lamb being limited is no surprise as they will get every opportunity to rest ahead of games.

Seems like great news for Dak's Week 9 status against the Broncos, although owners should continue to monitor as he was sore after practice last week. Like we said earlier today, the Cowboys play an early afternoon game, so we'll have plenty of time to know if Prescott is active this time around.

“For sure. I was getting prepared to play this game,” Prescott said. “I’m a guy that takes it day-by-day, moment-at-moment, and right now, I’m going to celebrate this win with the guys and worry about rehabbing and getting everything back in order tomorrow.”

Prescott was injured on the final play of the Week 6 overtime victory over the Patriots. The Cowboys, who had a bye last week, listed Prescott as limited in practice all week and questionable for the game. They called him a game-time decision, though, all signs pointed to Rush playing, the story said. With a comfortable lead in the division and an extra game this year, the thought was to not rush Dak back, who is also coming off a serious ankle injury. The good news is the Cowboys play early in Week 9, which is a home game against the Broncos, so owners will have much more notice as far as Prescott's status goes.
