The Training Room: Week 2 Injury Updates
Player Position Team Injury Recovery Timetable Potential Pickup Comments
Aaron Rodgers QB Packers Sprained Knee Returned to limited practice, GAME TIME DECISION DeShone Kizer Rodgers had not practiced all week up until Saturday, where he was able to at least participate in some fashion. He'll try and test his knee out tomorrow during warm-ups to see how he feels. The Packers won't risk losing Rodgers for longer than they have to so there is a legitimate chance that they sit him in order to get 100% better.
Marcus Mariota QB Titans Elbow Injury Returned to practice, EXPECTED TO PLAY WEEK 2 Blaine Gabbert This is an interesting injury to watch as nerve related discomfort can affect how quarterbacks are able to grip and feel while throwing the ball. The fact that Coach Vrabel stated that both Mariota and Gabbert will play this weekend speaks volumes that Mariota is still not 100%. Beat reporters were noticing that he didn't have the same zip on the ball when throwing so this is definitely a situation to monitor as I would not feel overly confident in starting Mariota if you have other options.
Devonta Freeman RB Falcons Knee Contusion RULED OUT FOR SUNDAY, 2-4 Weeks Tevin Coleman Freeman was dealing with knee soreness at the beginning of the week, but there weren't many details as to what was going on with the knee. The reports are that Freeman is dealing with a knee contusion, which could either mean just a bruise along the surface of the knee somewhere, or it could be a bone bruise which is more difficult to return from. Regardless, these injuries are fluid and would just keep tabs on his practice participation moving forward to get an idea if he's getting closer to returning to game action.
Desean Jackson WR Buccanneers Concussion Returned to limited practice, GAME TIME DECISION Chris Godwin Jackson is still in the concussion protocol but reports and expectations are that he'll be cleared before Sunday's game against the Eagles. This is something to keep an eye on closely as the independent neurologist will make the final say as to whether or not Jackson will play so make sure you keep tabs on this situation.
Marlon Mack RB Colts Strained Hamstring Full Participant, EXPECTED TO PLAY WEEK 2 Jordan Wilkins, Nyheim Hines This is the first time Mack has been able to practice fully in quite some time which is encouraging for his health moving forward as well.
Leonard Fournette RB Jaguars Strained Hamstring Has not returned to practice yet, GAME TIME DECISION T.J. Yeldon This is why optimism from coaches right after a game should be taken with a grain of salt. Fournette has not practiced at all this week, yet the Jaguars are not rulling him out in hopes he can test out his hamstring game day and figure it out. I still think he's unlikely to play as normally players who are closer to returning will at least get a limited practice session in later in the week.
Rex Burkhead RB Patriots Concussion Limited practice later in the week, QUESTIONABLE for Week 2 Sony Michel, James White Burkhead was limited in practice later in the week but still has not been given full clearance by the Patriots medical staff to retun just yet. He did however travel to Jacksonville with the team so there is a good chance that he's going to be cleared prior to Sunday's game against the Jaguars. Keep an eye on his status possibly early in the morning to make any necessary changes to your lineups.
Sony Michel RB Patriots Sprained knee Limited practice, GAME TIME DECISION James White Michel has been able to practice in limited fashion all week, which is encouraging given his extended absence since the preseason. The Patriots are thin at running back currently so Michel's return would be a big boost to the team. He looks more likely to suit up than to sit out at this point but he will likely be slowly worked into the mix.
Delanie Walker TE Titans Ankle Fracture/Dislocation Out For Season Jonnu Smith Walker suffered a pretty nasty injury late in the fourth quarter in Week 1 and needed to have this lower leg air casted while being carted off. This type of injury requires surgery and he will need to be immobilized for a good amount of time before even starting any rehab. It's a blow to the Titans offense but Smith should step right in for Walker.
Greg Olsen TE Panthers Broken Foot Out at least 6-8 weeks Ian Thomas Olsen has refractured the same foot that he had surgery on last year. It's a really brutal blow and just terrible luck for a guy who has been really durable up until last year. The Panthers don't plan on going the surgical route, but that could change depending on how his foot is healing and progressing. The fact that the Panthers are keeping him on the 53 man roster is a surprise, but it makes sense to not rush to a decision until they get a better feel for how the foot is healing.
Doug Baldwin WR Seahawks Sprained MCL RULED OUT FOR SUNDAY Brandon Marshall, Tyler Lockett Reports are that Baldwin will miss at least a few weeks to deal with the sprained MCL he suffered in Week 1. Timetables for recovery vary for these types of injuries, but normally 2-4 weeks would be the reasonable expectation for him to potentially return.
Davante Adams WR Packers Sprained Shoulder Limited in practice, QUESTIONABLE FOR WEEK 2 Randall Cobb, Geronimo Allison Adams played through the shoulder issue in Week 1 and should do the same in Week 2. However, the problem will also be who is throwing the ball to him as Aaron Rodger's status is up in the air. The concern with Adams' shoulder is that it may continue to get aggravated to the point where he might need to sit in order to full have it get back to 100%.
LeGarrette Blount RB Lions Sprained Shoulder Limited in practice, QUESTIONABLE FOR WEEK 2 Theo Riddick, Kerryon Johnson Blount suffered the shoulder injury on Monday and although he practiced fully earlier in the week, he was only able to get a limited session in on Friday. Having a player regress after participating in practice fully prior is always concerning so we're not sure if Blount suffered a setback of any sort. He'll likely be a game time decision and see how the shoulder is feeling.
Jeremy Hill RB Patriots Torn ACL OUT FOR SEASON Rex Burkhead, Sony Michel The worst case scenario has played out for Hill as his ACL was torn in Week 1. He'll undergo surgery and will be out the rest of the season.
Marquise Goodwin WR 49ers Strained Quad RULED OUT FOR WEEK 2 Pierre Garcon, Dante Pettis This was the expectation from the beginning of the week as quad strains do have a tendency to take longer to recover due to the amount of stress the muscle takes with running initially
Kenneth Dixon RB Ravens Sprained Knee PLACED ON IR, Alex Collins, Jarvorious Allen What seemed to be a minor issue with Dixon has now turned into another lengthy absence for him. He'll be sidelined for at least 8 weeks being on IR and we'll see what the Ravens plan on doing when he's eligible to return.
