Week 3 Recap: 13 Things You Need To Know

Records were made to be broken and many of them were in NFL Week 3. It was a historic day, to the delight of fantasy managers, as scoreboards across the league lit up. Taylor Swift attended the Kansas City Chiefs game and seemed quite pleased when Travis Kelce scored a touchdown. There truly was a little something for everyone on Sunday.

Top Players

Keenan Allen set the Chargers’ franchise record for receptions in a game. There did not appear to be anything the veteran receiver couldn’t do. He pulled in 18-of-20 targets and stacked up 215 receiving yards. He also completed his first career pass. It wound up being a 49-yard touchdown toss to a wide-open Mike Williams. Allen has 39 targets through three games this season.

Raheem Mostert certainly did his part on a day when the Miami Dolphins set a franchise record for points in a game. They also set an NFL record for most yardage in a single game. Mostert found himself celebrating in the end zone four times against the Denver Broncos. He ran for 82 yards and three scores on the ground while also catching all seven of his targets for 60 more yards and another touchdown.

Justin Herbert put in the work to help the Chargers earn their first win of the year. In a game with five lead changes, the Los Angeles quarterback attempted 47 passes and completed 40 of them. He ended his day with 405 yards passing and three touchdown tosses.

Matt Gay kicked his way into the record books on Sunday. Converting all five of his field goal attempts, including a 53-yard overtime game-winner, Gay became the first kicker to ever kick four 50+ yard field goals in one game. He also becomes the first kicker to be mentioned in my weekly recap.

Davante Adams put on a show in the nightcap. Hosting the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday night, Adams caught 13-of-20 targets. He scored two touchdowns and totaled 172 receiving yards. It was the 22nd game in his career where he had 10+ receptions.

Flop Players

Justin Fields had another tough day. This time, playing against the defending Super Bowl Champs, Fields failed to reach triple digits in passing yards. The young quarterback completed just 11 of his 22 attempts for 99 yards. He did have one passing touchdown while also throwing an interception for the third consecutive game. Fields salvaged a smidge of fantasy value by rushing for 47 yards on 11 attempts. However, for managers who roster Fields, it is very difficult to start him with any confidence at this point.

Breece Hall had a second consecutive frustrating outing after opening his season with some promise. The good news for Hall is that he did have 13 touches in Week 3. Yet, he did not do a lot with those touches. He ran the ball 12 times for 18 yards and added a single reception for nine yards. The Jets’ entire offense has looked underwhelming after losing Aaron Rodgers in the opening minutes of their Monday night game in Week 1.

Derrick Henry averaged less than two yards per carry on Sunday, producing his lowest rushing output since 2017. In a game where the entire Titan offense had a hard time getting anything going, Henry totaled just 20 rushing yards on 11 carries. If you’re looking for a bright side, it was against a Cleveland defense that has been stingy so far this season.

Pop Players

Devon Achane had a coming-out party for the ages. In just his second career game, the rookie speedster rushed for 203 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. He also caught all four of his targets to add 30 yards and two more scores through the air. If he is available in your fantasy league, he will be a top waiver wire priority after showcasing his explosive ability.

Sam LaPorta just keeps on trucking. While many veteran fantasy managers will advise you to be wary of first-year tight ends, LaPorta has thus far appeared to be immune to such concerns. He has caught at least five passes in each of his three career games to date. On Sunday, he made eight grabs and scored his first career touchdown. He is becoming a favorite target of quarterback, Jared Goff, earning 22 targets on the year, so far.

Tank Dell got a chance to show off his speed on an explosive touchdown catch as the Houston Texans earned their first victory of the 2023 season. He ended the game with more than 20 yards per catch after pulling down five passes for 145 yards. Dell scored a touchdown for the second week in a row and seems to have a rapport with rookie C.J. Stroud at quarterback. While he may not be available in many leagues, it is certainly worth looking into. The first-year receiver is certainly trending upward.

Drop Players?

Mike Williams had a nice game going for Los Angeles before exiting the game with a knee injury in the third quarter in Minnesota. Williams caught seven of eight targets and racked up 121 yards receiving with a touchdown. There is concern that he may be dealing with a significant knee injury. He will undergo an MRI in order to determine the severity of the injury.

Derek Carr injured his shoulder at Lambeau Field on Sunday. He was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. He is believed to have avoided a season-ending injury, but it is likely that he will miss time dealing with what appears to be an AC joint sprain.
