Draft note
by John Paulsen
Mostert led the way down the stretch in 2019, carrying the ball at least 10 times in the 49ers’ final eight games, averaging 14.6 touches for 99 total yards and 1.5 touchdowns per game. He is not the clear lead back heading into 2020, but he has made a better case than anyone on the roster. Mostert will be a high-upside back in any given week, but given the nature of the 49ers’ hot-hand approach at the position, this may be a frustrating situation for fantasy owners.

SF RB Raheem Mostert - 2020 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Raheem Mostert has spent time with seven teams over his five NFL seasons, but he has only 178 regular-season carries to show for it. This year he expects something different. After an excellent postseason where he compiled 53 rushes for 336 yards and five touchdowns, Mostert has earned the right to be the 49ers' primary ball carrier in 2020. And he was bulking up this offseason in an effort to be ready for the heavier workload. "I'm actually gaining some more muscle," Mostert said. "So I'm able to take those hits and be one of those guys that are getting 200 carries. I've got to get prepared for that." Mostert averaged a ridiculous 5.6 yards per carry behind a strong offensive line, and now projects to be the starter for the San Francisco 49ers in 2020.

Fantasy Downside
Mostert has never been a workhorse back. Not as a pro. Or in college. As Profootballtalk.com noted, in his most productive season at Purdue, he only had 93 carries for 529 yards. And the Niners will still take a hot-hand approach at the position.

2020 Bottom Line
Still, assuming he can fend off challenges from Tevin Coleman and (a possibly-healthy) Jerick McKinnon (Matt Breida was traded to Miami), it appears this will be the year when Mostert can prove his worth as an every-down back. If that's the case, his production last season -- Mostert tied for ninth among RBs in games with 20-plus fantasy points (no other 49ers back had more than one) -- suggests he'll be a viable fantasy asset -- assuming he remains with the team (absent a desired new contract, Mostert requested a trade early in July).
