MIA RB Raheem Mostert - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Raheem Mostert has shown promise in the past, most notably in 2019 when he finished with 952 scrimmage yards. During that season he averaged a blistering 5.6 yards per carry on 137 attempts, showcasing his top-end speed. Mostert landed in Miami where he told NFL reporter Josina Anderson that HC Mike McDaniel told him his role “will be similar to what it was in San Francisco.” McDaniel worked closely with Mostert as the 49ers’ run game coordinator before taking over as offensive coordinator. With a strong tie-in to the head coach, Mostert has a slight edge over some of his competition in Miami’s backfield.

2022 Fantasy Downside
Mostert joins a crowded backfield in Miami that features Chase Edmonds, Sony Michel and even incumbent back Myles Gaskin. Based on capital given up for each back, we’d expect Edmonds to be the starter while Mostert becomes the primary backup with Michel and Gaskin fighting for scraps. But injuries, training camp, preseason performances and more can shake things up before we get to the season. Speaking of injuries, Mostert has struggled to stay on the field in recent seasons, missing half of 2020 and only playing one game last year. Mostert had a knee cartilage injury that took him out last season, and it sounds like he’s still somewhat recovering from it, although he should be good to go in Week 1.

2022 Bottom Line
Mostert should have a sizable role for Miami, but it might not be enough to make him a reliable option in fantasy. Mostert has never been a strong receiving threat, averaging 0.6 receptions per game and we wouldn’t be surprised if Miami turns to Michel for goal line carries. So that leaves Mostert fighting for rushing attempts. Mostert should be viewed as a handcuff to Edmonds, or a deep bench add. His high-end speed will lead to some big runs throughout the season, but with everyone healthy, he’s likely to be a boom-or-bust type player throughout the season. He’s not a reliable fantasy option, but he is a noteworthy player.
