Tyler Allgeier Continues to Take Over the Atlanta Falcons Running Back Position

Atlanta Falcons running back Tyler Allgeier continued his dominant role in Week 16, taking his 18 carries for 74 rushing yards while adding four receptions for 43 more yards. We’ve really seen Tyler Allgeier establish himself as the lead back for the Atlanta Falcons in the past couple of weeks. Allgeier has carried the ball 35 times in the last two games, with four straight games seeing double-digit carries. It was also good to see him utilized more in the passing game in Week 16, with five targets and four receptions.

Tyler Allgeier Prospect Profile

Tyler Allgeier was a walk-in to the BYU football program after not receiving a scholarship. He redshirted his first year on campus in 2018 and played the following year sparingly. In fact, in 2019, Allgeier not only played running back but also took some snaps on defense at linebacker and recorded 26 tackles and one forced fumble. It wasn't until 2020 when he became the starting running back for the Cougars, and he wasted no time making a name for himself.
He averaged 16 broken tackles per 100 attempts—seventh-most—and averaged 3.5 yards after contact per attempt, which tied for sixth. Allgeier finished with 1,611 total rushing yards and 23 touchdowns. During this final season, he also received 32 targets in the passing game. He finished with 28 receptions and 199 receiving yards. Though he was just a marginal athlete across the board, he does have great size at 5-foot-10, 224 pounds. That size has helped him see the field early this season in early downs and goal-to-go situations.

Tyler Allgeier as a Championship Week Option

Per 4for4's John Daigle, Allgeier had previously not handled more than 11 touches, or 43% of Atlanta's backfield touches in any game alongside Cordarrelle Patterson before Caleb Huntley's Achilles' injury. In the two games since, Allgeier has had 48.5% and 61.1% of backfield touches and there is no reason to think that will change ahead of their Week 17 game against an Arizona Cardinals team that ranks 31st in schedule-adjusted fantasy points to the running back position.

The rookie RB has scored 22.6 and 15.7 PPR points over these last two weeks and is solidifying a place inside this offense past the 2022 season, regardless of what the team does in the NFL Draft. This is the first time he has been the clear leader of the backfield all season, not just being used as the receiving back but also taking the majority of snaps on early downs and in short-yardage situations, even with Cordarrelle Patterson back. This week's matchup with the Cardinals is good, as Arizona has allowed an average of 32.3 PPR points per game across the last three contests. Allgeier has a solid floor, and Arizona has little to play for at this point in the season. With Tampa Bay lurking in Week 18, this will be Allgeier’s best push to get closer to the 1,000-yard mark. Atlanta may help him get there by giving him 20 touches, which would be massive for his fantasy managers.
