Now that teams are focusing on the run and doubling Dez Bryant, Dallas is showcasing another reliable big-play threat on the outside in Terrance Williams.
Against New Orleans last week, Williams caught six passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns against one one-on-one coverage because the defense was doubling Bryant.
Offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said teams that leave Williams open to focus on Bryant are playing right in their hands.
“I think it was certainly our plan. We knew it was going to happen and it’s happened throughout the course of NFL history,” Linehan said. “I’ve been around these great receivers and they command a lot of attention and I’ve told the second receiver, 'You’ve got the best job on the team; you’re going to get the one-on-ones.'"
Williams only saw 14 targets through the first three games, but was targeted seven times in Week 4 against the Saints. Tony Romo is feeling better, and that should allow him to spread the ball around to the open receiver. With the defense focused on stopping Bryant, Williams shined in Week 4.
