If the Bengals' aerial attack is going to see significant improvement this season, someone is going to have to step up and into the No. 2 spot opposite A.J. Green.

The two most likely candidates to fill the role appear to be fourth-year wideout Brandon Tate—who was used exclusively in the return game last season—and rookie third-round pick Mohamed Sanu.

Sanu, a 6'2", 211-pound gifted route-runner appears perfectly suited for the role, but it appears that Tate has been impressive enough during the offseason to earn the early inside track.

Fantasy Impact:

Whoever wins the WR2 job in Cincy will likely only have borderline fantasy value. We believe that TE Jermaine Gresham will become Dalton's second-favorite target and will see an increase in his targets in 2012.

Late last season, teams could take away the passing game by shutting down WR A.J. Green because the Bengals did not have a receiver who excelled on short to medium routes. With Jerome Simpson and Andre Caldwell gone, it looks to be a three-player competition among Brandon Tate, Armon Binns and Mohamed Sanu. Tate and Binns showed improvement during OTAs and minicamp, but Sanu, a third-round pick, might have the edge because he is a physical receiver who excels between the numbers.

Fantasy Impact:

Tate appears to be in the lead for the WR2 job, though it's early. We're expecting TE Jermaine Gresham to get the second-most targets in the Cincy passing game.

Bengals OC Jay Gruden on WR Brandon Tate, who has spent some time running with the first-team in workouts: “He’s been one of the best surprises of camp for me. Last year he came in late (after being acquired on waivers from New England) and was mainly a return guy and our fifth receiver and never really got in the flow with the group at wide receiver. Now I think he’s more confident, he sees that he belongs as an NFL wide receiver, and I think the confidence level that he has is showing. He’s got all the ability. He runs all of the routes great, he’s got great feel, and he’s done an outstanding job.”

Tate and Armon Binns appear to be the early leaders in the battle to start opposite A.J. Green.

Fantasy Impact:

The Bengals have a big hole at WR2 and are looking to fill it. Rookies Mohamed Sanu and Marvin Jones are also in the mix, but Gruden seems to be leading towards a vet. We believe that TE Jermaine Gresham will actually see the second most targets in 2012.

With each catch during the past three weeks of the Bengals voluntary workouts, WR Mohamed Sanu is emerging as solid go-to guy with his big body and big hands to match his family's big dreams. Offensive coordinator Jay Gruden doesn't know how much Sanu will end up playing or where. But he does know he's dealing with a guy much older than his 22 years.

"He just has a natural instinct to be a big, friendly target; he knows what he has to do to get open," Gruden says. "A lot of guys when faced with a route adjustment round it off and it allows the route to get jumped for an interception. But he's got the ability to stick his foot in the ground, make the right shade or angle and get that 12-yard completion."

Fantasy Impact:

It sounds as if Sanu is impressing in his audition to be the Bengals' WR2 in 2012. Stay tuned.
