Members of the media were allowed to watch one of the Bengals three practices this week, and I came away very impressed by rookie wide receiver Mohamed Sanu.

“Man, that guy is smooth,” said A.J. Green. “He works the middle really well. A lot of people have questioned his speed, but the guy has ‘football speed.’ It’s just like myself. A lot of people say that he didn’t run the fastest, but you see him on the field and he’s fluid in-and-out of his breaks, he catches everything with his hands, and he attacks the ball. He’s going to be a special one.”

Fantasy Impact:

The WR2 job in Cincy is wide open and whoever emerges opposite of Green will be fantasy relevant in 2012.

Bengals WR Brandon Tate lined up opposite A.J. Green with the first team. Let us also note that it is May 22 and a long way to go until the Sept. 10 opener at Baltimore.

Head coach Marvin Lewis did say last week that if the season started tomorrow either Brandon Tate or Armon Binns would be the starter because they have experience in the offense. Mohamed Sanu and Marvin Jones are just learning it.

Fantasy Impact:

Whoever wins the WR2 job in Cincy will be fantasy relevant, so this is something to monitor as the summer progresses.

When asked about his WRs, Bengals HC Marvin Lewis said: "I thought Mohamed Sanu was everything we expected him to be. He’s going to come in here and play as a rookie and push to start and play time. Marvin Jones to me really had a great five practices. His ability to be a returner will stand out. He really tracks the ball well. You see the speed compared to the size."

It looks like Lewis is expecting Sanu to push for the starting job opposite of A.J. Green.

Third-round Rutgers wide receiver Mohamed Sanu is durable, reliable, versatile, good hands, smart, crafty, and no diva traits. His M.O. fits the classic NFL No. 2 receiver job description.

The Bengals think he's a slightly bigger and a little faster than T.J. Houshmandzadeh. If Sanu can do for A.J. Green what Houshmandzadeh did for Chad Johnson, the Bengals have a Pro Bowl-type guy that catches 80 to 90 balls a year in and out of the slot.

But don't underestimate the one speed receiver the Bengals did draft in the fifth round in Cal's Marvin Jones. How he slipped there with his size (6-1) and speed (4.46) is a mystery, but the word is there wasn't much tape to go on because the quarterbacking wasn't great out there.

Draft guru Rob Rang of CBSSports.com was on this guy early and often. A few days before the draft he picked out Jones as a guy for the Bengals if they went running back early and chose to get the receiver later.

Rang compared Jones's Senior Bowl to the one Chad Johnson had in 2001. A West Coast guy that came out of nowhere to fly up the draft board. Rang said no receiver since Johnson in '01 had such a coming-out party as Jones in Mobile and that's where Bengals receivers coach James Urban first saw the scouting reports come to life and was immediately impressed.

Fantasy Impact:

For what it's worth, beat writer Joe Reedy predicted that Jones would win the WR2 to start the season.
