WR Mohamed Sanu will make his 49ers debut Sunday against the New York Jets, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. Sanue's signing was made official Friday after WR Richie James was placed on IR.
Sanu will see snaps for the receiver-needy 49ers. San Francisco lacked veteran depth to complement the younger receivers, and Sanu brings that and proven success from his time with the Bengals and Falcons. Sanu is not a play this week, but we should have a better idea of his role after Sunday.
Sanu has connections with Kyle Shanahan from their days in Atlanta, so he could get on the same page quickly with the offense. With Deebo Samuel on the IR, the 49ers are short at WR and now TE George Kittle is battling an injury. We had a story Monday about the lack of targets for 49er WRs in Week 1, but it's probably best to take a wait-and-see approach with Sanu in Week 2.
The 2019 first round pick continues to have his tires pumped heading into the season. Free agent WR Damiere Byrd was also name-dropped by Girardi as a player the team likes. The two will be vying for a lot of available targets assuming the Patriots throw the ball at a decent weekly clip. Beyond Julian Edelman and James White, the passing offense is an open competition for targets.
Sanu proved to be a massive bust after fetching a second round pick to move from Atlanta to New England last season. He never meshed with Tom Brady last year and fell behind first-round pick N'Keal Harry on the depth chart at camp in 2020. Sanu will likely get another shot to play for a team in need of depth at wide receiver.
