Raiders QB Geno Smith suffers quad contusion during TNF

Injury was added to insult for Geno Smith in the Raiders' Thursday night loss to the Broncos.

On a night in which nothing went right for Smith and the beleaguered Las Vegas offense, the quarterback suffered a quad contusion on the opening play of the fourth quarter during the team's 10-7 loss to Denver, although head coach Pete Carroll expressed postgame it shouldn't be a long-term issue.

Fantasy Impact:

This will presumably be labeled "day-to-day" for now, with Pickett the most likely starter should Smith be sidelined. Next up is the Cowboys defense, so whoever mans center will actually have some fantasy appeal.

Raiders trade for QB Kenny Pickett

Browns are sending QB Kenny Pickett to the Las Vegas Raiders, per sources.

Fantasy Impact:

As Schefter summarized, the Raiders needed another backup for Smith with O'Connell fracturing his wrist in the preseason finale and being expected to miss 6-8 weeks. As for the Browns, they had a logjam at the position so it makes sense Pickett would be the one moved. Now the Browns will need to settle their QB depth chart behind starter Flacco.

Browns feel Kenny Pickett healthy enough for active roster

The Browns believe QB Kenny Pickett is healthy enough to remain on the active roster, furthering the belief that the team will keep four quarterbacks.

Fantasy Impact:

Joe Flacco is entrenched as the starter (for now) and the Browns have continued to lean towards keeping both Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. Fowler also reports the Browns haven’t gotten “knee-deep” into how the depth chart will look and who will backup Flacco in Week 1. Perhaps a trade could be in play down the line, but for now, the Browns look like they will keep four quarterbacks when they cut down to 53.

The Browns are naming QB Joe Flacco as their starter, the end of a training camp competition that never really was.

Flacco quickly emerged as QB1, while the others battled injuries. The player who led them to the playoffs in 2023 is back.

Fantasy Impact:

This isn't really shocking news. The thing to watch will now be how the rest of the QBs align behind Flacco as we get closer to the season. Both Sanders and Gabriel didn't look bad in their preseason games in Weeks 1 and 2, but both have dealt with injuries. The team has a lot of options, and this will need to sort itself out by the start of the season. The Browns Week 3 preseason game could go a long way to determine the rest of the order.
