There's a Mike Martz signature that's missing from the Chicago Bears: explosive passes down the field.

The Bears have the league's worst quarterback rating on pass attempts that travel at least 21 yards through the air. According to STATS LLC, the Bears' quarterbacks have completed just nine of 43 such passes (20.9 percent) for 317 yards with one touchdown and six interceptions for a passer rating of 26.0.

By contrast, the league average is 13 completed passes of 21 or more yards and a rating of 77.9, with the Kyle Orton-led Denver Broncos tops in the league with 24 completions (44.4 percent) for 804 yards with six touchdowns and one interception for a passer rating of 120.5.

While scouts swoon about quarterback Jay Cutler's arm, the Bears haven't been able to showcase it largely because of the team's erratic pass protection. Seven-step drops -- a staple of Martz's offense in St. Louis, when he ran the Greatest Show on Turf -- have been greatly reduced to protect Cutler.
