Some clarity on Chris Carson's upcoming neck surgery: HC Pete Carroll said his understanding is that Carson has a disc issue that needs to be fused.

The tweet went on to quote Carroll: "That’s a surgery that can get him back somewhere late in the spring. That’s what I’ve heard. So we’ll see what happens with that." We reported earlier today the team was prepared to use a committee in Week 11 instead of a bigger workload for Collins, but Penny injured his hamstring on his first run and the team split reps with Collins and Dallas for the most part. It looks like the Seattle backfield is going to come with risks for the rest of the season in terms of workload. Penny's hamstring injury is said to be minor.

Rashaad Penny made his first career start Sunday and gained 18 yards on the first play, but he hurt his hamstring and only played seven more snaps.

The story said the Seahawks wanted to go with a backfield committee, and that may have included Penny based on him getting the start. The story went on to say the team still did use a committee with Dallas and Collins (who's been their primary back since Chris Carson went down). Each played 18 of 49 snaps. Travis Homer played five snaps. Pete Carroll didn't have an update postgame on Penny's injury, the story went on to say. With Carson lost for the season, Penny could have fantasy value if he can get healthy, and stay healthy. However, with the Seahawks sinking in the standings, it could shift to a committee with an eye toward 2022.

Seattle has deployed a committee of backs behind Alex Collins since Chris Carson went down in Week 4. Last week against the Packers was the first week this season that less than three RBs saw snaps for the Seahawks. Travis Homer saw 31 snaps to Collins 30 snaps while Penny saw zero snaps for the first time in two weeks.

Facing a tough Arizona defense and allotting snaps to three to four players at the position makes it difficult to predict who might have success for this Seahawks' backfield.

Seahawks RB Chris Carson (neck) has been designated to return from Injured Reserve. He now has three weeks to be active or miss the remainder of the season.

Seattle could turn into a full-blown committee once Carson returns. The good news is his neck is in better condition than one month ago when it was mentioned he could miss the rest of this season.

Collins was questionable last week and still gutted out a solid performance. If he were to miss Week 8, it would be a full blown RB committee.

Four running backs is as good as one, right? The trio minus Penny was effective but Penny has 1st round pedigree and should mix in immediately.

Head coach Pete Carroll is looking to Rashaad Penny to provide some running back help. Penny is able to come off of injured reserve this week and Carroll said Monday that he is ready to return to action this week.

The Seahawks put Carson on injured reserve last week and Collins got banged up in Sunday night’s loss to the Steelers, so there’s a need for some help in the backfield in Seattle. Given the injuries, and we know Carson will miss some more time, Penny makes for a potential solid add for those needing help at running back. Collins' status would likely determine Penny's value, at least in the short term.

It sounds like Collins has a chance to play in Week 7. With Chris Carson out for a while and on IR, Collins was the workhorse back in Week 6. If he can't go, it could be Penny's turn this week. This is a situation worth monitoring as we get closer to Week 7, but either way, Penny looks like he's worth adding in any format until this situation is a little more settled.
