Coach John Fox announced Monday that quarterback Kyle Orton will start the Denver Broncos' Week 1 game against the Oakland Raiders.
The Broncos made the announcement on their Twitter page. The Denver Post reported Monday that Fox hasn't decided yet whether Brady Quinn or Tim Tebow would be Orton's backup.
The announcement comes after Orton's latest strong preseason performance in which he completed 10-of-13 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown against the Buffalo Bills. Orton is 12-of-19 for 172 yards and a touchdown in two preseason games.
Obviously, for now, this shatters the dreams of Tim Tebow fans, who were hoping for potential gaudy fantasy passing and rushing numbers this year.
Orton started last season on fire, throwing for 295, 307, 476, 341 and 314 yards his first five games. He threw just 9 picks in 13 games with 3 coming in his final contest. This year, under John Fox, the Broncos are expected to run more, but that won't hold true if they fall behind in games, and a lot of times that's where Orton earned his fantasy worth. Still this year, even with this news, he's not more than a QB2 option. In fact, we rank him 23rd which is high-end QB3 status. He should still be around very late in drafts.
