Michael Robinson Fantasy News

Seattle Times - [Full Article]

Seahawks WR Braylon Edwards was inactive on Sunday after his knee swelled unexpectedly, Ben Obomanu suffered a wrist injury in Detroit and Doug Baldwin is unlikely to be back for this week's game after suffering a high ankle sprain on Oct. 18. That's some serious uncertainty at wide receiver, which means the Seahawks might be making changes to the 53-man roster.

Obomanu and fullback Michael Robinson each saw a specialist after suffering wrist injuries in Sunday's game, and Carroll did not have an update on either.

Fantasy Impact:

The good news for the Seahawks is Sidney Rice is rounding back into shape as the team's #1 WR.

The Everett Herald - [Full Article]

It's not often that you hear a grown man known for scarfing down Skittles talk about how much he has grown up, but that is exactly what Marshawn Lynch credits with improving his game this season. With one game still remaining, Lynch has already established career highs in rushing yards and touchdowns and has the highest yard-per-carry average of his career. Plenty of that has had to do with the growth of the offensive line in front of him, as well as the blocking of fullback Michael Robinson, who was named a Pro Bowl alternate, but Lynch also said he has become a harder worker and better student of the game this season.

"I feel I became a pro this year<" he said. "In the studying, the taking care of my body, doing the little things that I could have gotten away with when I was younger, like not stretching, just going out there.

Lynch said watching the way Leon Washington prepares for games and takes care of his body has been a big help, as has studying the game with Robinson and Justin Forsett.

"A lot of the things I have learned, I have learned from those guys in that room," he said.

"He came to me a few weeks back and said, ‘Help me do what the other backs have done in this thing,'" offensive line coach Tom Cable said. "And we made a deal. You have to do it the way I ask you to do it, and he's done it. A lot of credit goes to him because he was able to maybe push his ego or push his own beliefs, to some extent, aside and embrace something new. Because this is a system that asks a back to do things a certain way, and once you get in and through the line of scrimmage, then do your thing, you can do all the craziness you want then, but you've got to do it this way from A to B, and he bought into A to B."

Fantasy Impact:

With just 117 rushing yards (and zero TDs) in his firs three games, Lynch started to hit the waiver wire in shallow leagues. Since Week 4, he has scored 13 TDs in 11 games, while averaging a healthy 108 total yards per game. He is now the #8 RB in fantasy points per game and is shaping up to be a late 1st round/early 2nd round pick next summer.

Brian Westbrook signs with 49ers
Monday, August 16, 2010, 7:21pm

ESPN - [Full Article]

Former Eagles running back Brian Westbrook has signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers.

Westbrook has been looking to find a job, visiting several teams in recent months. Westbrook had spent his entire eight-year career in Philadelphia but was released in the offseason after injuries limited him to just eight games in 2009.

The 49ers' 2009 third-round pick, running back Glen Coffee, abruptly retired over the weekend. Coffee was expected to compete with Anthony Dixon and Michael Robinson for the backup job to starter Frank Gore. Coffee told the 49ers he no longer wanted to play football.

Westbrook is a two-time Pro Bowler and at the height of his career was considered one of the best all-around backs in football. However, he struggled with multiple concussions in recent years and the Eagles decided to move on.

Westbrook led the NFL with 2,104 yards from scrimmage in 2007, but missed eight games last season with a pair of concussions and an ankle injury while scoring only two touchdowns.

The 30-year old passed a physical on a visit to St. Louis earlier this offseason. As recently as Saturday, the Rams denied reports they were close to a deal with Westbrook.

Westbrook also visited the Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos during the course of the summer.

Fantasy Impact:

The move makes sense after Glen Coffee retired. Westbrook isn't what he used be, and while he should be the RB2 on the 49ers, he'll still have Michael Robinson and Anthony Dixon around. He's an injury risk at age 30 as well so don't have high expectations he'll be a major fantasy contributor this year.

49er Notes: offense coming into place
Monday, August 16, 2010, 9:21am

CSN Bay Area - [Full Article]

• The 49ers' Rule No. 1 for a backup runner is, "Protect your quarterback." Michael Robinson has a strong grasp of the blitz pickup responsibilities. Rookie Anthony Dixon does not . . . yet.

• All in all, it's been a promising offseason for quarterback Alex Smith. He has shown a better command of the offense and he has taken some significant strides in winning the trust of his offensive teammates.

Smith has never excelled in the exhibition season. Of course, he'll be judged on how he performs when the regular-season begins. But it certainly would be beneficial for the overall mindset of the team if he can experience some degree of success in these exhibition games.

• The 49ers' top three wideouts appear set. Michael Crabtree and Josh Morgan are the likely starters. Ted Ginn has impressed the coaching staff, and has nailed down at least the No. 3 job at the moment. But the big question is: Who will surface as the 49ers' Nos. 4 and 5 receivers?

Dominique Zeigler, who has no more practice-squad eligibility, appears to have the edge for that spot after a strong opening of training camp. Jason Hill has yet to provide the 49ers' coaching staff with the kind of consistency it wants to see. Kyle Williams has made some plays from the slot. Meanwhile, veteran Brandon Jones falls further and further behind the others because of a hamstring injury.

49ers RB Glen Coffee retires from football
Friday, August 13, 2010, 3:32pm

Matt Barrows on Twitter - [Full Article]

49ers RB Glen Coffee said to day in a prepared statement that he is retiring and moving on from football.

Fantasy Impact:

This one came as a shock. Last year's preseason darling, Coffee was slotted in as the primary backup to Frank Gore. Gore looks to get the vast majority of the work in San Fran, but Michael Robinson and rookie Anthony Dixon will battle it out for the #2 spot. Robinson may win the job initially, but Dixon will be the long term answer to the questions left behind by Coffee's departure.
