The Vikings waived/released the following players on Saturday to bring their roster to the regular-season required total of 53 players:

Lions CB Phillip Buchanon joined the Lions' long injury list Thursday when he left practice with a tight hamstring. Schwartz said he had not ruled out anyone for Saturday except perhaps tight end Casey Fitzsimmons (ankle) and cornerback Keith Smith (groin). But he has been cautious throughout camp, and it seems likely several players will be out. ... The Lions signed two veterans: offensive lineman Milford Brown and safety Calvin Lowry. "We're in a situation with some injuries where we need some guys to be able to get up to speed pretty quickly, and we won't be afraid to put either of those guys in the game on Saturday," Schwartz said. ... The Lions cut defensive tackle John Gill and tight end Jake Nordin.

Jim Schwartz was shocked by the number of Lions fans who showed up for an open practice at Ford Field, despite the pouring rain. He expressed his gratitude in an address to the fans before practice. The official attendance for Saturday's two-hour practice -- featuring players in full pads -- was 15,387.

A number of players missed the practice with injury, including rookie tight end Brandon Pettigrew, rookie safety Louis Delmas, receiver John Standeford, tight end Casey Fitzsimmons, tight end Jake Nordin, receiver Bryant Johnson, safety Louis Bullocks, running back Maurice Morris, offensive lineman Lydon Murtha and cornerback Keith Smith.
