Kenbrell Thompkins may have "best speed" of Pats receivers
Sunday, August 4, 2013, 11:18am

Boston Globe - [Full Article]

The wide receiver competition is clearly the No. 1 battle to watch as Tom Brady searches for his new favorite targets. This seems like an “all hands on deck” year when the Patriots keep six receivers, plus a couple more on the practice squad. Who knows if the rookies can handle the rigors of a 16-game season, plus playoffs?

Danny Amendola, Julian Edelman, and rookies Aaron Dobson and Josh Boyce are roster locks.

Undrafted rookie Kenbrell Thompkins, who might have the best speed on the field and has looked fantastic so far, is a clear favorite for the fifth spot. That leaves seven receivers, headlined by Matthew Slater, Kamar Aiken, and Michael Jenkins, battling for the sixth spot.

Fantasy Impact:

Thompkins measurables are fairly mediocre all the way around, but there is no doubt that he's been impressing in camp. The "best speed" comment is interesting because Dobson (4.42) and Boyce (4.38) ran much faster 40-yard dashes leading up to the draft. Thompkins is an interesting late-round pick given all the opportunity at receiver.

When it comes to a taller "X" receiver on the edges, there is the proven commodity (10-year veteran Michael Jenkins) versus the higher-upside rookie (second-round pick Aaron Dobson). In spring drills, Jenkins (6-foot-4, 215 pounds) was a consistent presence in the role by taking most of the top-unit reps, but that doesn't mean he'll necessarily be there when it counts. You have to figure Dobson (6-3, 200) will be given every chance to seize the job and develop the desired connection with quarterback Tom Brady. He showed flashes of excellence in camp (specifically in contested situations down the sideline) but also some inconsistency catching the ball.

Fantasy Impact:

Our money is on Dobson winning the job, though it's no sure thing that he'll make a fantasy impact given the team's history with rookie receivers.

ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss said he thinks Julian Edelman is the Patriot's No. 2 receiver on opening day if he is healthy. Reiss added that he wouldn't undersell his athleticism and speed. He went on to say, naturally, losing part of the offseason as he rehabs his foot wasn't ideal, but one of the main things he has going for him is a trust built up with QB Tom Brady and a knowledge of the offense.

Fantasy Impact:

Danny Amendola is the team's WR1, which means Edelman will likely battle with WRs Aaron Dobson, Michael Jenkins, and Donald Jones to get WR2 snaps. Right now, we have Dobson as the Pats WR2 with Edelman third. Dobson is going very late in drafts with an ADP of the 14th. With potentially no TE Rob Gronkowski to start the season, the Pats could rely more on the run.

A Patriots free-agent signing from the Buffalo Bills, WR Donald Jones hasn’t been able to break through for first-unit repetitions, as 10-year veteran Michael Jenkins, third-year man Kamar Aiken and rookie free agent Kenbrell Thompkins served as the primary outside receivers.

Fantasy Impact:

The Pats are looking for a WR to step up aside from Danny Amendola and Julian Edelman. It's a situation to monitor during training camp.

Patriots sign Michael Jenkins
Friday, March 29, 2013, 11:25am

NFL.com - [Full Article]

The New England Patriots typically bring a ton of veteran wide receivers into training camp, and then let them battle it out for a roster spot. On Thursday, they brought another familiar name aboard.

The team announced the signing of former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Michael Jenkins. Details of the contract were not made public.

Jenkins caught 40 passes last season and has averaged 40 per year over the last three seasons as the possession receiver for the Vikings and Atlanta Falcons.

Fantasy Impact:

Not much to see here, as Jenkins' best days are behind him.

Jordy Nelson plays through knee injury
Monday, December 31, 2012, 1:29pm

4for4

Packers WR Jordy Nelson missed a few plays due to a knee injury, but returned to catch a TD en route to a 5-87-1 day.

Nelson's return was crucial with Randall Cobb out and Jarrett Boykin leaving the game with an apparent leg injury.

Fantasy Impact:

The Packers sure could use a bye week to heal up, but they lost their chance at a week off when they couldn't contain the apparently unstoppable combination of Christian Ponder and Michael Jenkins. The Packers and Vikings play on Saturday.

Vikings WR Percy Harvin (ankle) has been downgraded to out for Week 13 versus the Packers. He was limited in practice on Wednesday and didn’t practice at all on Thursday or Friday. With Jerome Simpson and Michael Jenkins starting on the outside, rookie Jarius Wright will once again line up as Minnesota’s slot receiver.

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said there is still no real update on WR Percy Harvin (ankle). We will learn more as he continues to rehab this week.

Fantasy Impact:

With TE Kyle Rudolph also in doubt, it could also mean more targets for WRs Jarius Wright, Jerome Simpson, and Michael Jenkins. But none of those are great options.

Percy Harvin's ankle 'sore and pretty tender'
Monday, November 19, 2012, 2:09pm

ESPN 1500 Twin Cities - [Full Article]

Percy Harvin was absent as the Minnesota Vikings resumed practice on Monday, 15 days after he sprained the ankle in a Nov. 4 loss at Seattle.

"Most of the swelling is gone," Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said. "It's just sore and pretty tender right now. So, we'll see how he feels when we come back on Wednesday."

Frazier said after the Lions game he expected Harvin, who leads the team with 62 catches for 677 yards and five total touchdowns, to be ready after the bye. The Vikings return to action on Sunday against Chicago.

Fantasy Impact:

Frazier said it wasn't a setback, but he hoped Harvin would be ready to go Monday after the Vikings bye week. We'll know more about Harvin's status on Wednesday. TE Kyle Rudolph could benefit again if Harvin doesn't play. With Michael Jenkins also banged up, Jerome Simpson, Jarius Wright and Devin Aromashodu are next up on the depth chart at WR.
