Washington Post - [Full Article]

Veteran wide receiver Mike Furrey, sidelined after suffering a concussion early in training camp, has been placed on the season-ending injured-reserve list, a person familiar with the situation said Thursday.

Furrey, 33, did not return to training camp, which ended Thursday, after the injury Aug. 2. Coach Mike Shanahan said recently that the Redskins had not determined how to handle Furrey's situation on the roster, "but I'm sure when we do, we'll let you know something." The Redskins did not immediately have a comment about the roster move.

Bears OC Mike Martz Is High On Devin Aromashodu

Mike Martz is aiming to make Chicago's offense stronger, and he's got a good opinion of the wide receivers on the roster. He's singled out Devin Aromashodu as a potential playmaker.

Fantasy Impact:

If a guy like Mike Furrey can make a fantasy impact playing for Martz, Aromashodu definitely can. He could be a very savvy draft choice, although it remains to be seen if he'll outshine Johnny Knox and Devin Hester in the fantasy world. Fantasy owners need to keep close tabs on Chicago's receivers during training camp and the preseason.

Browns No. 2 receiver

Cleveland Plain Dealer - [Full Article]

Although Browns WR Josh Cribbs has made a strong case for the spot opposite Braylon Edwards, Mangini won't necessarily name a No. 2 or use the same one each week. Veteran Mike Furrey has played well all preseason and figures to get plenty of reps. Rookie Mohamed Massaquoi has also performed well enough to merit playing time.
"I don't know if it has to necessarily be 'this is number two, this is number three, this is number four,'" said Mangini. "Sometimes, you rotate guys through and depending on roles on special teams, depending on matchups, you could have all different starters throughout the course of the year."

Browns Coach Eric Mangini's first official depth chart was revealed. Some notable listings: Hank Fraley is the No. 1 center, Mike Furrey the No. 2 receiver. Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn are listed as co-starters. The o-line starters are Joe Thomas, Eric Steinbach, Fraley, Floyd Womack and John St. Clair. The tight end is Robert Royal. On defense, Corey Williams and Kenyon Coleman are the starting ends, David Bowens and Kamerion Wimbley the outside linebackers. Mangini said he didn't spend a lot of time arranging the depth chart. It shouldn't be regarded as a complete evaluation of the roster at this point.

The Browns believe that nearly as important as finding the right QB is getting better play out of the receivers. They need Braylon Edwards to return to something approaching his Pro Bowl 2007 season and provide a big-play threat. If Edwards can do that, the Browns think Mike Furrey can help as a slot receiver. They consider receptions for first down a key stat, especially in third-down situations. In 2006, 54 of Furrey's 98 catches were for first downs. In 2007, it was 37-of-61. Last season, he played only nine games and caught 18 passes. They liked what they saw from the 32-year-old in minicamps.

Why are Browns stockpiling WRs?

Cleveland Plain Dealer's Tony Grossi reports - [Full Article]

Since the Browns included no comment from coach Eric Mangini or GM George Kokinis in their official announcement of the signing of free agent WR Mike Furrey, here are Grossi thoughts: They no doubt have a good idea by now that Donte Stallworth will not be available to play in 2009. Although the Browns have no official legal counsel on staff - a somewhat glaring omission for an NFL club these days - it's not unreasonable to assume that Lew Merletti, the senior VP and 25-year veteran of the U.S. Secret Service, is all over this one. Stallworth has been away from the team for weeks to defend himself against a DUI manslaughter charge in Miami...

Detroit Free Press: Lions WR Mike Furrey said Thursday he had his
first symptom-free day and could be close to playing this week
after suffering the first concussion of his career two weeks ago
against Jacksonville. "I ran pretty hard today, and (if) my
symptoms are gone tomorrow and I don't have any repercussions from
today, I'll practice tomorrow," said Furrey, who missed his first
game since 2004 last week at Carolina. "And if I wake up Saturday
with nothing, I'll be ready to go Sunday." Furrey took part in
drills and ran routes without a helmet. When practice started, he
left the field to run a mile on the treadmill and lift weights.
