Ronnie Brown Fantasy News

Wednesday, April 2, 2014, 12:11pm

Union-Tribune San Diego - [Full Article]

Chargers beat writer Kevin Acee was asked about new RB Donald Brown.

"Filling in this year for 5-10 touches per game, plus insurance for if/when Ryan Mathews gets injured. He played 16 games for the first time in 2013, and he was not healthy in the postseason."

Fantasy Impact:

Last year's RB3, Ronnie Brown, rarely saw 5-10 touches so those are going to have to come from somewhere. Ryan Mathews began to get hot and get over 20 carries a game in the second half last year, but like Acee points out, Mathews wasn't healthy in the playoffs, perhaps as a result of that. Brown's fantasy value likely will be a handcuff to Mathews, but it looks like he's going to be used to prevent wear and tear on Mathews too. Danny Woodhead may also lose a carry or two, but will still be a factor in the passing game.

Ryan Mathews re-aggravates ankle injury
Sunday, January 5, 2014, 10:03pm

Chargers RB Ryan Mathews missed much of the second half of Sunday's win after re-aggravating his ankle injury.

Fantasy Impact:

Mathews did not play during much of the third and fourth quarter while the Chargers were in clear drain-the-clock mode. Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown handled rushing duties with Mathews sidelined. He finished with 15 touches for 64 yards.

Fantasy Impact:

Mathews left the game but was able to come back. The Chargers play the Chiefs in Week 17 and if Mathews can't go, Danny Woodhead would likely see an increased role with Ronnie Brown also mixed in.

McCoy: Ryan Mathews has a chance to play in Week 13
Wednesday, November 27, 2013, 12:41pm

ESPN - [Full Article]

Per Chargers HC Mike McCoy, RB Ryan Mathews (hamstring) has a chance to play in Week 13.

Fantasy Impact:

We still consider him doubtful since he re-injured his hamstring, but we'll monitor his practice reps this week ahead of Sunday's game. The Chargers play in the late round of games. Danny Woodhead would be a great start if Mathews is sidelined, while Ronnie Brown would likely see an expanded backup role.

Ryan Mathews aggravates hammy
Sunday, November 24, 2013, 7:40pm

Union-Tribune San Diego - [Full Article]

Chargers running back Ryan Mathews aggravated a right hamstring injury, forcing his third-quarter exit. He had 14 carries for 53 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown. It's his second goal-line score in three games.

No timetable was given for his absence or that of any Charger.

Fantasy Impact:

Ronnie Brown mostly picked up the slack with six carries and Danny Woodhead also had six, which has pretty much been the norm for him. Brown would probably see more work if Mathews misses time, but Woodhead's value would also increase and could end up with the bigger role.

Ryan Mathews suffers a concussion
Monday, October 7, 2013, 9:08am

Pro Football Talk - [Full Article]

Chargers running back Ryan Mathews suffered a concussion in Sunday’s game at Oakland, multiple media outlets reported.

Mathews left the game in the second quarter. He rushed three times for eight yards.

Fantasy Impact:

Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown are the only other Chargers tailbacks on the roster and neither is really a carry-the-load back. Mathews was averaging about 15 carries a game this season as Woodhead saw his touches increasing since Week 1. If Mathews were to miss time, the team could look to bring in another back. The Bolts play Week 6 at Indy on Monday night so Mathews will have more time to pass protocol, but we may not know his status ahead of time.

Last night's split in Chargers backfield: Ronnie Brown 25 offensive snaps, Ryan Mathews 20, Danny Woodhead 10.

Fantasy Impact:

There wasn't a lot expected out of the Chargers backfield this season in terms of fantasy production, but I think we all thought Mathews would be the guy to somewhat emerge. Brown mostly played on third down, and it's a bit of a surprise Woodhead wasn't more involved. It's only one week, but you get the sense it could be a situation to stay away from.

The Chargers' faith in RB Ryan Mathews appears unshaken [after a preseason fumble].

Aside from the fumble, for which Mathews and coach Mike McCoy agreed Cardinals defensive end Calais Campbell deserves some credit, the 25-year-old has shown good vision behind a more physical offensive line. He has 26 carries for 121 yards and a touchdown in three games.

Fantasy Impact:

The preseason fumble was his first. Mathews has lost seven of 12 career fumbles on 675 regular-season touches, according to the story. It doesn’t appear it will put Mathews in the doghouse. But even so, Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown figure to cut into Mathews’ workload this year. Mathews is clearly the most talented of the backs and would have low-end RB2 potential. Right now he ranks as a RB3 for draft purposes.
