2026 Running Back Handcuff Charts & Draft Targets

Handcuffing running backs in fantasy football continues to be a hot-button strategy. For every league-winning late-round stash who steps into a full workload, there’s another who clogs up your bench and never sees meaningful touches. The toughest part is often just figuring out who the actual handcuff is — depth charts can be misleading, and coaching preferences seem to change in an instant.

Still, having a strong read on backfield hierarchies across the league is valuable, even if you’re not actively drafting these backups. Whether you’re hunting for waiver-wire help midseason or trying to uncover a low-rostered DFS dart throw, knowing which players are most likely to inherit volume can be a serious edge.

Finding fruitful handcuffing situations is especially important if you have spent high draft capital on the running back position, since these running backs have such a high workload, running backs taken in the first five rounds of the draft tend to be the most injury-prone group of players amongst all fantasy positions.

I have separated possible handcuffing situations into three categories: entirely injury-dependent, situations to watch throughout training camp, and backups with opportunities for immediate output and/or concerns about that team’s perceived starter. Let’s dig in.
