The future is now in New Orleans, with the Saints making rookie QB Tyler Shough their starter.

Spencer Rattler now heads to the bench, while the second-rounder moves to the forefront in a decision coach Kellen Moore informed them of today.

Fantasy Impact:

The stats say Shough was worse than Rattler last week against the Bucs after taking over, but the Saints are making the switch. With the Saints not going anywhere, it makes sense for the team to see what they have with their second round pick from this past spring. Reports out of camp from spring and summer from some who follow the team said the competition wasn't really close, and Rattler was the better option. Now the question becomes how does this decision affect some of the other weapons on the team. It's probably at least a slight downgrade until we see otherwise.

The Saints quarterback competition is officially over.

Head coach Kellen Moore announced in his Tuesday press conference that Spencer Rattler is the team’s starter to begin the season, with Rattler winning the battle over Tyler Shough.

Fantasy Impact:

Moore said that Rattler and Shough made the decision hard because they were so close. Moore cited Rattler’s experience as one of the factors in his winning the competition. Moore added that he doesn’t want to debate the QBs throughout the season, so the plan is to have Rattler as the starter and Shough continue to develop.

Head coach Kellen Moore told reporters at a Tuesday press conference that the competition will continue through Saturday’s game against the Broncos. Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough have started the first two preseason games and Moore said he could not give any indication of where things stand at this point because the coaching staff has not made any decisions.

Fantasy Impact:

The story said Moore didn’t say who would start against Denver, but shared that Rattler and Shough will continue to split first-team reps in practice this week. Moore added the competition is really close. Those who follow the team have said in the past Shough didn't look ready and the team would likely have to go with Rattler to start the season. So, it's possible Shough has closed the gap in Moore's eyes.

Tyler Shough to start for Saints vs. Jaguars

The Saints announced Saturday that rookie quarterback Tyler Shough will start Sunday’s preseason game against the Jaguars.

Fantasy Impact:

Spencer Rattler started the first preseason game, so the Saints are simply giving Shough his opportunity as the quarterback battle continues between the former South Carolina quarterback and the rookie second-round pick out of Louisville. Shough threw for 165 yards, a touchdown and an interception last week against the Chargers.
