The end-of-game sequence was symbolic of an outing in which Jimmy Garoppolo seldom threw to his wide receivers and often was a tick off when he did. Three plays before the final incompletion to Trent Taylor, Garoppolo saw Kendrick Bourne all alone in the right corner of the end zone. His throw had too much loft, however, allowing cornerback Patrick Peterson to recover and break up the play.
Bourne and Taylor combined for four catches for 41 yards and were the only 49ers wideouts to catch a pass. The team’s would-be starters, Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, were ruled out with injuries, and Samuel won’t be back until October at the earliest after going on injured reserve on Saturday.
The 9ers mainly targeted tight ends and running backs the story said. The story also added Aiyuk, who is recovering from a hamstring strain, was close to playing against the Cardinals.
SF WR Trent Taylor - 2018 Fantasy Football Outlook
Early indications are Taylor will remain San Francisco’s primary option out of the slot, especially in third-and-short situations. According to the team's official website, rookie Dante Pettis is likely to get reps there as well in specific situations, but Pettis won’t be limited to the slot, either. Both young wideouts should carve out roles for themselves within the 49ers offense.
Taylor, who underwent back surgery this offseason, opens training camp on the PUP list. He can come off at any point prior to the season, but any missed time will give Pettis time to prove his worth.
2018 Bottom Line
Unless you're in a redraft league that awards points for return work (Taylor ranked 21st in the league in return yardage last season), it's going to be hard to justify investing draft capital in 49er wideouts beyond Pierre Garcon and Marquise Goodwin. Other formats, primarily Dynasty, might be a different story.
