Chiefs HC Andy Reid praising RB Carlos Hyde

Kansas City brought back Damien Williams and Darrel Williams and signed journeyman back Carlos Hyde to compete for snaps, but midway throughout training camp, the former Williams (and the Chiefs' presumed starter) is not on the field. The 27-year-old back missed the past week with a hamstring injury and there is currently no timetable for his return.

Fantasy Impact: 

"Carlos has done a nice job," HC Andy Reid said. "He's getting a lot of reps and he's taking advantage of them." In Kansas City, Hyde suddenly has the opportunity to stake a claim for a starting role again with Williams currently out of the rotation. It doesn't appear the Chiefs are just being cautious with Williams as Reid has appeared frustrated with Williams lack of practice time, according to reports.

Andy Reid sounded frustrated with starting running back Damien Williams, who has yet to practice with the Chiefs at training camp because of a sore hamstring. ‘’He’s missed quite a bit,’’ Reid said. “He’s missed a lot of plays. It’s been great for these other guys. (Carlos Hyde) has done a nice job. He’s got a lot of reps and he’s taking advantage of them.’’

Fantasy Impact: 

Damien Williams' hamstring shouldn't keep him from starting this season, but the fact he has never had more than 50 carries in a season coupled with this early injury will likely make you pause before hitting draft. There's no doubt that Williams was great to finish last season and if he can stay healthy, he will put up good numbers in this K.C. offense, but if you do grab him, Carlos Hyde and Darwin Thompson need to be on your radar as well.

Fantasy Impact: 

Williams left practice early on Sunday, according to reports, and right now there is no indication if it's a serious hamstring injury or if the Chiefs are just being cautious with Williams. Williams is expected to be their top RB and is ranked eighth among our RBs heading into drafts.

Carlos Hyde is getting some pass-catching work in the Chiefs' backfield

He's a backup to Damien Williams at least for now but running back Carlos Hyde has stayed busy at Chiefs mini-camp. Hyde, who signed with the Chiefs as a free agent this year, has occasionally played in the lineup with Williams and frequently has been used as a receiver out of the backfield. "For a running back like me who likes to catch the ball . . . it would be like a dream come true," Hyde said.

Fantasy Impact: 

Hyde was quoted as saying "I didn't know they used the running back so much in the passing game until I got here. It put a smile on my face." He's looking for a fresh start in Kansas City, but will most likely remain in a back-up role unless something were to happen to Damien Williams. The 28-year old is currently being drafted as RB48 but could see his ADP rise if he performs well at camps and the preseason.
