Perfect Fantasy Football Draft: 1st in a 12-Team ESPN PPR League

So, however you have come upon it, you've landed the 1st overall pick in your draft. This allows you to pick from the entire catalog of skill players in the NFL. You can take any player you like to start your draft. Granted, you have a bit of a wait until you select again, but for the rest of the way, you get to enjoy back-to-back selections, giving you ideal opportunities to start runs in a particular position. In the words of Boromir from "The Fellowship of the Ring", it is a gift.

My plan here is to show you how to dominate your draft on ESPN platforms should you find yourself blessed—and you should count yourself blessed—with the first overall pick position in your 12-team leagues. I will walk through my favorite players in each round that should be available to me and discuss my overall draft strategy from this draft spot.

My Plan of Attack When Drafting 1st

Roster Settings: 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 Flex (WR/RB/TE), 1 Kicker, 1 DEF, 7 bench spots

Take one of the big guns - if the draft falls into place, then I'd like to start with two stud running backs with my first three picks. But the best way to guarantee that is to make sure I grab an elite back with my first pick
Look for backs with access to high-value touches - ideally I want running backs who are going to see either pass-catching work on their teams, and/or the goal line work. We are chasing touchdowns here, after all.
Ignore kickers and defenses until the very end of the draft - I don't place too much value on these spots in regular fantasy, and many experts in the field of fantasy analysis worship at the altar of streaming these spots. I want all of my starters and most of my backups in place before I even contemplate picking one of these positions.
