Head coach Kevin O'Connell referred to Cam Akers, acquired Sept. 20 via trade from the Rams, as complementing starter Alexander Mattison, who still dominated the playing time and workload with 98 yards from scrimmage. But O'Connell envisions a role for both.
"Seeing how [Akers] complements Alex," O'Connell said after the game, "when those guys can both stay fresh and be maximizing their opportunities, it was exciting to see that [Sunday]. ... Cam is always going to have real firm, solid finish [to runs] just like Alex does, where yards after contact should be a good number for him."
In his Vikings debut, Akers was effective with 51 yards on seven touches, the story pointed out. He flashed acceleration and power, while benefiting from the season's best blocking and perhaps the lightest competition to date, the story added. Akers had a three-down role, taking every snap in a 10-play drive in the second quarter. But as the story also said, Mattison still controlled most of the playing time and since the trade has carried 37 times for 188 yards (5.08 YPC) in two games, vs. the first two games where he ran 19 times for 62 yards.
New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara made his season debut Sunday after serving a three-game suspension for his role in a 2022 fight in Las Vegas, and the offense leaned heavily on him in the 26-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Quarterback Derek Carr, who has been recovering from a shoulder injury, said on Sunday that he wished he could've utilized Kamara more.

Kamara caught 13 balls for 33 yards. Unfortunately, the 33 yards isn't a typo, and, according to the story, was the first time that a player had 13 or more catches and so few yards. The previous record was set by Buccaneers running back James Wilder, a name from Tecmo Bowl days, who had 13 receptions for 71 yards in 1985. The good news for Kamara owners is it looks like he could see a lot of work out of the backfield, especially with Williams on IR.
The Titans have started the clock on wide receiver Kyle Philips’ return from injured reserve.
Philips has been designated for return, which gives him a three-week window to practice with the team.
Philips can be added to the active roster at any point in that span, but will not be able to return if it ends without his move off of injured reserve. Philips injured his knee in the preseason. The 2022 fifth-round pick had eight catches for 78 yards as a rookie and he also returned five punts, the story pointed out. Philips has a chance to emerge as the team's WR3 when he's back to full strength, but seems to be more of a deep league add at this point given the Titans run-heavy offense.
