As the Lions’ RB competition unfolded, there weren’t many players who separated themselves. Injuries to Jermar Jefferson and Mohamed Ibrahim didn’t help, and the sudden retirement of Justin Jackson came as a surprise. When Craig Reynolds got the bulk of the carries in the first half of the preseason, it felt like you could pencil him in as RB3. However, the Lions’ initial 53-man roster has just two true running backs: Montgomery and Gibbs.

Not that many were worried about either option coming off the field after they spent so much monetary and draft capital on the two, but it's still a relief to know they're not part of a three-back rotation. It sounds as if Reynolds could be back on the team, as he's not subject to waivers. There will likely eventually be an RB3 on the roster, but it's clearly an afterthought for the team.

The Lions signed RB Craig Reynolds from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, per source. He's now signed with Detroit through 2022.

The tweet went on to say Reynolds has 37 carries for 195 yards with an 88.3 PFF grade over the last two weeks. He's no threat to Swift in town but it's worth it for the Lions to see what Reynolds can do with for the rest of the season heading into 2022. It looks like at the very least he's passed Igwebuike and Jefferson on the depth chart. He'll be tough to trust in the Lions offense but is worth adding for the depth at the very least.

The Lions are “hopeful” to get T.J. Hockenson and D’Andre Swift back, and Dan Campbell says they felt better today, but they’re still day-to-day.

Hockenson is dealing with a hand issue and Swift a shoulder injury. The Lions aren't likely to push either player to return with another lost season at hand. If Swift can't go and Williams is still out, it could be another combo of Jefferson, Igwebuike, and Reynolds at running back. The team said Jefferson didn't get much time because he was out of practice with a sickness leading up to the game. It's possible he would get more work in Week 15, which would really complicate the RB workload.

Lions RB Jamaal Williams was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list and will miss Week 14's game in Denver. RB D'Andre Swift (shoulder) is also out, while TE T.J. Hockensen (hand) is doubtful.

Lions coach Dan Campbell says RB D’Andre Swift is still pretty sore. “It’s hard to say that you’d see him playing,” he said.

Owners should probably prepare to be without Swift in Week 13. Williams is recently back from injury himself but carried the load after Swift went down on Thanksgiving. The rookie Jefferson should also be involved.

Williams did not practice this week, so his absence Week 10 is no surprise.

Add running back to the positions that have been hit by the bug as well, after rookie Jermar Jefferson left practice on Monday with a leg injury. D’Andre Swift also has missed significant practice time while nursing a sore groin.

The story said it's a big blow for Jefferson, who has been having a nice camp and figured to play a large role in the preseason opener on Friday against Buffalo. As for Swift, the story said he’s suited up almost every day, but rarely has participated in seven-on-seven or 11-on-11 work. That's left Williams as the main back for the Lions.
