The Jets on Tuesday placed tight end Jace Amaro, a second-year pro and potential major asset for their passing offense, on season-ending injured reserve with a torn labrum in his shoulder that will require surgery.
Coach Todd Bowles had previously said that Amaro, a former second-round draft pick who got hurt in the preseason opener Aug. 13 at Detroit, just had a shoulder sprain — and that he would miss only "a couple weeks."
That obviously didn't turn out to be the case. And now, Amaro's sophomore season with the Jets is over before it even started.
"When he got hurt, it was either a two-and-a-half, three-week period to get better," Bowles said. "Or if it didn't get any better and it was still as worse as it was, then we would have to go ahead and do surgery. So we gave him time to get better, and he didn't get better. So the end result is we've got to do surgery and put him on IR. He's still in a lot of pain. If you're in pain and you're not getting any better, you've got to fix it sooner than later."
The Jets' top tight end is Jeff Cumberland, though he's not a major threat in the passing game. Amaro's injury provides a challenge for Cumberland to improve that part of his game, the story said. The Jets also have blocking tight end Kellen Davis, and two roster-fringe tight ends: Arthur Lynch and Wes Saxton.
