Washington plans to find ways to get Antonio Gibson the ball in space rather than force him inside. Part of the logic involves limiting wear and tear. The presence of rookie Brian Robinson affords that shift.

The Commanders, having already retained pass catching specialist J.D. McKissic, selected the Alabama standout known for power and ball security in the third round. At a minimum, Robinson is expected to handle short-yardage work, duties given to Gibson last season following the release of Peyton Barber.

Rivera called Robinson "a big, strong, powerful downhill runner, more so than anything else.” The story said Robinson popped some solid runs while primarily holding down first-team duties Wednesday. He’ll receive ample work with the starters as long as this cautious approach with Gibson remains, it went on to say.

As Finlay pointed out, Gibson missed a bit of minicamp with hamstring twinge too. Gibson can have a tough time staying on the field but is one of the most intriguing RB2-types heading into the 2022 season. After an RB13 finish in 2020, he finished RB12 in 2021, but was 20th on a per game basis. He was 10th in touches per game (18.5) and his offensive line is a top-12 unit according to our offensive line guru, Justin Edwards. But, Gibson is currently the RB23 off the board in early drafts, probably because J.D. McKissic is back after briefly committing to the Bills, and Gibson’s targets were significantly higher (4.4 vs. 2.7 per game) when McKissic missed five games last season.

The Buffalo Bills had signed RB J.D. McKissic to a two-year deal, but McKissic has reversed course and returned to the Washington Commanders for the same deal.

Gibson is expected to miss Week 17 unless he somehow tests negative Saturday and Sunday.

Washington running back Antonio Gibson was not spotted during the portion on Thursday's practice open to the media.

Gibson was limited on Wednesday and looks to be headed towards a DNP on Thursday, putting his Week 17 status in doubt. The hip injury appears to be a new one for Gibson as he was listed with a shin injury on last week's injury report. We should have more clarity on his Week 17 availability following the release of the team's final injury report on Friday, but Gibson is likely headed towards a questionable tag. Washington plays in the early window this weekend, so fantasy managers will be able to adjust accordingly on Sunday morning. Gibson is currently our 21st ranked running back for Week 17.

Expect Gibson to play, and who knows with Samuel. He is not on the fantasy radar because he does not play/does not finish games.

Gibson was listed as limited on Wednesday's estimated practice report and misses Washington's first practice of the week. Playing on a short week, Gibson has just one more day to test out his foot in practice. With J.D. McKissic on injured reserve and practice squad running back still on the reserve/COVUD list, rookie running back Jaret Patterson could be called upon to play an expanded role for Washington if Gibson is ruled out. Gibson is currently our 12th ranked running back for Week 16.

J.D McKissic is on IR. That means he misses at least three of last four games.

McKissic is dealing with a concussion. He'll have a chance to return for Week 18, which could be a meaningful game assuming Washington can remain in the playoff hunt - or it could be a meaningless game in which they don't risk McKissic's return. Williams and Patterson should see time behind Gibson going forward.

Neither WFT QB Taylor Heinicke nor Kyle Allen tested out. So they remain on the Reserve/COVID list. It's a big game for both teams who need this win to keep pace for a wild card playoff spot. With Gilbert getting the nod, it's a huge downgrade for the passing game and McLaurin.
