CJ Spiller struggles behind playcalling

The Bills' big offseason acquisition? He was squished by the Fish. Rookie running back C.J. Spiller touched the ball 11 times and managed just 14 total yards.

The Bills' new play caller? Coach Chan Gailey got off to a forgettable start. His offense managed just nine first downs and 166 net yards, the lowest in 20 games for the Bills.

Buffalo's seven-year offensive slump, it seems, isn't going to evaporate overnight.

"We've got to get better at running the football," Gailey said. "You can't go out there and play two-minute offense the whole ballgame, we know that. We've got to find better ways to run the football, and that's my responsibility to get that done."

The Bills' game plan was to attack the edges of Miami's defense. The Bills clearly did not think they could run the ball straight at the Dolphins. Buffalo came out in "passing formations" -- with three or four wide receivers -- on 10 of their first 12 and 15 of their first 19 plays. For the game, Gailey called 39 passes and 14 runs.
