How Alabama or Georgia Could Win the National Championship

Georgia and Alabama meet Monday night for the National Championship in a rematch of their SEC Championship game, which Alabama won 41-24. FanDuel and DraftKings each have great odds boosts for new users on Moneyline bets for the big game. At FanDuel, if you bet $5, you’ll win $150 if your team wins. At DraftKings, a $5 bet will net you $200. Alabama is +125 and Georgia is -145 to win at both books—an obviously great value. We believe there’s a case for each team to win the game. Before we get to our analysis, though, let us tell you more about each amazing offer.

Now that you know how to win money betting the National Championship, let's analyze the game to envision how either team could win (you money).

The Case for Alabama — They’re still Alabama

For casual followers, it seems strange Alabama is an underdog against Georgia again after winning so definitively the first time around, and that’s understandable. Alabama relishes the underdog role. The last two times Alabama was an underdog against Georgia they won by 17 points a few weeks ago and 28 points in 2015. This is a different Georgia coaching staff, but Alabama has won seven straight games against Georgia in all kinds of fashion. The Alabama offensive line had its ups and its downs this year, but they were sublime the first time around against Georgia not allowing a sack against the Dawgs' vaunted defense. In the semi-finals, they weren’t quite as good in pass protection, but their game plan was clearly to try and establish the run against a smaller Cincinnati front—they did that running for 301 yards. Alabama is dealing with a couple of injuries along the offensive line so that’s worth keeping an eye on, but it’s not like Alabama is ever hurting for talent at any position. Also, at the end of the day, it’s Bryce Young against Stetson Bennett. Bennett has had a nice season for Georgia, but Young won the Heisman Trophy for a reason. If it’s a game that comes down to which offense can manufacture scoring drives down the stretch, you have to believe Bryce Young is more likely to do it.

The Case for Georgia — Their Defense Won’t Play That Poorly Again

It’s easy to forget Georgia led 10-0 four seconds into the second quarter of the SEC Championship Game before things fell apart in a hurry. Call it a wake-up call if you will, but that was the kind of game Georgia needed to re-center itself after being untested all season. The Orange Bowl was a chance for Georgia to find its edge again on defense and that’s what they did against a clearly overmatched Michigan team. Georgia registered four sacks and held the Wolverines rushing attack to -0.21 EPA per rush play. Only so much of what happened against Alabama was schematic. Georgia’s secondary was viewed as a question mark all season, but nobody had been able to test them until Alabama did. They’ll be able to learn from their mistakes and Kirby Smart, Dan Lanning and the rest of the staff will be able to make some adjustments. It also helps they won’t have to deal with John Metchie, who had six catches, 97 yards and a touchdown before tearing his ACL late in the first game between these teams. Slade Bolden and Ja'Corey Brooks stepped up well in Metchie’s absence against Cincinnati, combining for seven catches, 97 yards and two touchdowns, but that doesn’t negate Metchie's big loss. Georgia doesn’t want to get into another shootout with Alabama because it’s evident they can’t keep up under those terms, but it’s hard to imagine Georgia's defense struggling that mightily the second time around, particularly because Alabama is dealing with injuries up front.
