WSSP Milwaukee: After missing most of last year with an injury, are you still considered the starter?:

Packers RB Ryan Grant: “I would think so. I don’t know. From what I’ve heard, that’s the conversation that was told to me. … I was told that by [former running backs coach Edgar Bennett], initially. Jerry [Fontenot, the new position coach] didn’t tell me that anything changed. Jerry told me that as of right now I’m still the leader of the backfield and the expectations won’t change. … I do believe there will be competition, which is fine. I’m all for that.”

Fantasy Impact: 

Grant missed nearly all of 2010 with an ankle injury while rookie James Starks came on strong in the playoffs as the Packers workhorse. The Packers also drafted rookie RB Alex Green in the 3rd round. This will be a camp battle to keep an eye on with a committee attack likely.

The Packers selection of Alex Green is a concession to the expected loss of Brandon Jackson to free agency and could be acknowledgement that Ryan Grant will be gone after his contract expires in 2012. Regardless, Green has outstanding talent, it's just a matter of whether he'll be able to adjust to tighter quarters in the pro game.

Ryan Grant's season lasted only 18 snaps before an ankle-leg injury intervened. He was healthy by mid-December, but the decision had been made three months earlier to place him on injured reserve. Thus, the Packers will get back one of the NFL's most productive ball carriers with the freshest of legs. Grant, 28, has a year left on his contract with a base salary of $3.5 million and a roster bonus of $1.75 million.

Ryan Grant, Green Bay’s leading rusher from 2007-’09, should be fully recovered from an ankle injury that landed him on the injured reserve list Sept. 14. Grant said this week that he expects to be 100% sometime next month and will be a full participant in Green Bay’s offseason program if a new labor deal is in place.

Brandon Jackson said he owns a house in Green Bay and would prefer to remain a Packer. But Jackson also said Green Bay’s management team hasn’t made any contact with his people.
