Throw another name into the hat in an already-crowded wideout competition in St. Louis. In re-signing with the Rams, Mark Clayton brings a veteran presence with good speed and yard-after-the-catch skills.

Clayton showed he was a quick study last season in picking up the offense quickly, so learning the Josh McDaniels scheme shouldn't be a problem. But Clayton's surgically repaired knee (more precisely, his patellar tendon) isn't quite 100 percent.

If he goes on PUP/reserve, which is likely, he will be sidelined at least six weeks. But St. Louis is a good fit for Clayton and he has a very good chemistry with quarterback Sam Bradford.

Clayton is the team's ninth wideout, and the Rams are expected to keep six or seven. Danny Amendola, Donnie Avery, Brandon Gibson and Mike Sims-Walker appear to have jobs locked up. The final two or three spots will be decided from among Danario Alexander, Mardy Gilyard and rookies Austin Pettis and Greg Salas. If Clayton starts on PUP/reserve list, the team won’t have to worry about clearing a roster spot for him until mid-October or later.

When Rams fans ventured out to Rams Park for training camp or Lindenwood for their scrimmage, they noticed that one receiver stood out above the rest.

Danny Amendola. A lot of fans still don't embrace him, since he arrived as an extra guy off another team's roster, but all this guy does is perform.

“Danny has come out here and kind of sparked things,” Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said after Tuesday’s practice.

He has been head and shoulders above the competition thus far in training camp, despite his slight stature.

He has caught everything thrown and kicked his way. He has looked as quick afoot as ever.

Amendola, the team’s unlikely receiving leader from a year ago, seems determined to keep his top target status. He has been The Man thus far, despite the return of Donnie Avery and the team’s addition of veteran Mike Sims-Walker and rookies Austin Pettis and Greg Salas.

Common sense suggests the shifty Amendola, the rangy Sims-Walker and the speedy Avery will lead this group if healthy. Each offers unique skills and relative experience.

Fantasy Impact: 

Another report says that Brandon Gibson has been starting alongside Amendola and Sims-Walker in all three-receiver sets, so Avery is looking like a reserve at this point.

The word out of St. Louis is that Brandon Gibson has been an early standout among the Rams' wideouts.

But head coach Steve Spagnuolo also likes what he has seen so far of rookie wide receivers Greg Salas and Austin Pettis.

"I'll tell you what, they as much as any of the vets, have picked up the system pretty well," Spagnuolo said of the two rookies. "They don't look like normal rookies to me. By that I mean, normally they'd be tired, they'd be making a lot of mental mistakes. I don't really see that."

Rams WR Mardy Gilyard is in trouble. He struggled to learn last year's offense and wasn't exactly a stickler for details when he did play. New offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is installing a new and more complex offense and because of the NFL lockout Gilyard will have little time to absorb it all. This will be a big problem for him.

Brandon Gibson also figures to be on shaky turf. The rookies, Austin Pettis and Greg Salas, have the same basic profile as Gibson - taller, more physical receivers. But both figure to be more productive than Gibson. They will run better routes and have more reliable hands. Gibson dropped eight passes last season.
