Cardinals RB David Johnson to have fullback for first time

The Arizona Cardinals have welcomed David Johnson back to the field during organized team activities with something he's never had before in the NFL.

A true fullback.

During his first three seasons, Johnson played in the fullback-less offense of former coach Bruce Arians, who didn't shy away from his dislike of the position.

Fantasy Impact: 

Johnson is quoted in the article saying it makes his job a little easier, which is welcome news to fantasy owners, who already have sky-high expectations for him coming off an injury last season. Johnson also ran behind a fullback in college, and his new RB coach Kirby Wilson said he's always coached a fullback. This move may be out of necessity though, as the Cardinals are thin at WR behind Larry Fitzgerald, meaning far less 3WR sets in 2018. It will likely also mean more defenders in the box against Johnson. Either way, Johnson is locked in as an elite high-volume RB option in 2018 fantasy drafts, but this is a curious wrinkle to watch in the preseason.

Cards don't see any more IR-return candidates

Cards GM Steve Keim emphasized Monday: That other available IR-to-return spot very well could go unused.

“You have to have someone healthy enough to return,” Keim said during an appearance on the “Doug and Wolf” show on Arizona Sports 98.7. “At this point, I don’t see any guys coming back for sure.”

But what about David Johnson? Is keeping the star running back, coming back from a bad wrist, more about saving him for 2018? Keim said no.

“He gets paid to play football,” Keim said, adding that if Johnson was healthy and was cleared by the doctors, he should return to the field. “But if there are any gray areas, I don’t know why you’d want to risk it.”

Fantasy Impact: 

Johnson has been working on conditioning, but hasn’t returned to practice — obviously, since the clock would start in that case, the story pointed out. He's obviously a player owners have been eyeing up saving a roster spot for this season in hopes of a return during the fantasy playoffs. Keim didn't definitely close the door here, but it sure seems like Johnson returning this year is unlikely.

Arians says at this point he doubts David Johnson plays again this season.

Fantasy Impact: 

This goes right along with a report we had earlier today where it said GM Steve Keim seemed a lot less optimistic about Johnson getting back on the field this season. It's a blow to those who traded for, or stashed, Johnson with the hopes of using him in the fantasy playoffs. Seems like it may be time to move on from Johnson in redraft leagues.

Cards GM Steve Keim said running back David Johnson (wrist) was doing well but the rehab is time-consuming. “We will continue to monitor that to see if he can come back this season,” Keim said.

As for Carson Palmer, Keim said there were a lot of “moving parts” for his potential return as well. He also acknowledged Palmer’s return will be influenced at least some on how the Cards are playing.

Fantasy Impact: 

The key to this is author Darren Urban added, "Just judging by Keim’s tone, there was less optimism for returns of those star players than I had figured previously." As we kind of expected, the return of both players could very well be determined by whether or not the Cards are in the playoff hunt. If they're not in the hunt, it really doesn't seem to make a lot of sense for either to get back into game action this season.
