Bengals WR A.J. Green has minor ankle surgery, will miss a 'few games'

Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green had surgery today on the ankle he injured in practice last week.

Green had what is viewed as a minor clean-out procedure, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports.

Rapoport later added, "Following surgery, based on what they found cleaning out the ankle, he’s now expected to miss a few games, I’m told. Not ideal."

Fantasy Impact: 

The updated recovery timeline means that Green's stock will continue to take a hit. We currently project him to play 12 games, which makes him our No. 22 receiver in half-PPR formats.

An MRI revealed that Bengals’ WR A.J. Green has torn ligaments in his left ankle that is likely to sideline him six to eight weeks, source tells ESPN.

Fantasy Impact: 

Green is not expected to be ready for the regular-season opener at Seattle, Schefter went on to say. The team was hoping it was going to be a four-week ankle sprain recovery, but this is obviously a big blow to the Bengals offense.

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green was carted off the field in practice today, according to The Athletic’s Jay Morrison.

Fantasy Impact: 

According to Morrison, Green was batting for a contested catch with cornerback Dre’ Kirkpatrick and came up gimpy. There were differing reports on the specifics of the injury but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is reporting is it a sprained ankle. If that’s the case, then the Bengals may have dodged a serious bullet, as Green’s expressions suggested the injury may have been worse. Green will get an MRI. Rapoport says the team may exercise extreme caution throughout the preseason with Green.

Bengals WR A.J. Green (toe), TE Tyler Eifert (ankle) 'trending in right direction'

Bengals HC Brian Callahan also didn't have a couple of key weapons available either as wide receiver A.J. Green didn't participate in any of the OTA sessions and only participated in position drills during minicamp as he returns from toe surgery and tight end Tyler Eifert watched all of it from the side as he recovers from surgery for a broken ankle.

Fantasy Impact: 

Callahan said both are "trending in the right direction" heading toward training camp. Green is ranked 11th on our WR list while Eifert is just 30th. Obviously if, and it's a big if, Eifert can stay healthy he could outproduce his preseason ranking. In four games in 2018, Eifert averaged 3.8 catches for 45 yards and 0.25 touchdowns. In 14 games since 2016, Eifert has averaged 3.4 catches for 44 yards and 0.43 touchdowns.
