League sources said that the Rams had been talking to New England about trading for one of its running backs.

But the sources said the Rams were more interested in other running backs on New England's roster, not so much Maroney, the St. Louis native who has been slowed by injuries for much of his four seasons with the Patriots.

The Patriots currently have four running backs on their roster, including veterans Kevin Faulk, 34, Fred Taylor, 34, and Sammy Morris, 33, plus youngster BenJarvus Green-Ellis, 25.

The Rams' conversations with the Patriots date back at least to late August, when the teams met in Foxborough for the third game of the preseason. But for now, the Rams' search for backfield help behind Steven Jackson remains just that — a search.
