Todd Haley recently spent some time going over the Chiefs he considers “core players” or those he sees being part of the foundation in 2010 and beyond.

Some of the names — Jamaal Charles, Brandon Flowers, Tamba Hali — aren’t surprising. Others are.

Quarterback Brodie Croyle, who as Matt Cassel’s backup threw 40 passes in 2009, is on the list. So are wide receiver Quinten Lawrence (one catch), defensive lineman Glenn Dorsey (eighth on the Chiefs with 45 tackles), linebacker Derrick Johnson (another backup) and offensive tackle Branden Albert (fifth in the NFL in sacks allowed with nine).

Clearly, there’s more that goes into being on Haley’s list than production. Much of it involves a player’s willingness to accept a role, however limited, and ability to buy into the coach’s team-first way of doing things.
