WR Austin earns his way onto field for Cowboys

Miles Austin owns the most prolific performance by a receiver in Cowboys history. Now, it appears he owns a spot in the starting lineup.

Wade Phillips stopped short of declaring Austin a starter. But the Cowboys’ head coach did say the receiver will be on the field against Atlanta as much as he was Sunday afternoon against Kansas City.

“He’s going to play,” Phillips said. “I mean, he played 58 plays in this game and I’m saying he’s going to play 50-something plays in the next game, too. We’re going to get him on the field.”

Austin started for the injured Roy Williams and responded with a spectacular afternoon. Austin had 10 receptions in his first NFL start and scored from 59 and 60 yards out in the fourth quarter and overtime. His 250 yards receiving broke the club record of 246 yards set by Bob Hayes in November 1966.

“It would be foolish to say, ‘OK, he’s second team, he’s behind everybody else, so he’s going to play however many plays he’s been playing before,’” Phillips said.

“His run after the catch is so strong that you get him the football and he’s liable to make a big play. We’ve got to get him in the game.”
