Shanahan: 49ers Brian Robinson Jr. brought here to be RB2

Kyle Shanahan was firm about Brian Robinson's expected role after San Francisco sent a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Washington Commanders for him last week.

"We brought him here to be our [No.] 2 back," Shanahan said. "I've always been a big fan of Brian. Loved him coming out of college. ... We were pumped that he was available and pumped that we were able to get him."

In 2024, Robinson was third in the league on a third or fourth down of 3 or fewer yards (7.8 yards per carry), though the sample size was just 14 attempts.
Christian McCaffrey will remain the focal point of San Francisco's running game, but Robinson provides an experienced backup who could offer some value in short-yardage situations.

The story said the 49ers were 18th in the league in short-yardage situations, averaging 3.2 yards per rush. The story went on to say Guerendo has struggled to stay healthy. Though he just got back from a shoulder injury, he had a pair of fumbles in a recent practice and is more likely to have an early-season spot on various special teams units.

Joe Flacco is entrenched as the starter (for now) and the Browns have continued to lean towards keeping both Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. Perhaps a trade could be in play down the line, but for now, the Browns look like they will keep four quarterbacks when they cut down to 53.

Vikings sign QB Carson Wentz, trade QB Sam Howell to Eagles

The Vikings signed quarterback Carson Wentz and traded quarterback Sam Howell to the Eagles.

Fantasy Impact:

The Vikings had worked out Wentz recently and have now added him to the roster. To make room, Howell was traded to an Eagles team that in search for a short-term backup to Jalen Hurts, as Tanner McKee is dealing with an injured finger and his status for the start of the season is unclear.

The move is also a sign of the confidence the Vikings have early on in rookie Max Brosmer as the potential backup to J.J. McCarthy. At the very least, he’ll stick around as the No. 3 after a solid preseason.

This is the third time in about a year and a half that Howell has been traded. He went from Washington to Seattle in March 2024 (after starting 17 games in 2023), then from Seattle to Minnesota back in April and now from Minnesota to Philadelphia.

Chargers GM Hortiz: Najee Harris feeling ‘great’, could play Week 1

Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz said Saturday night that running back Najee Harris is feeling “great” and that he is hopeful the vet can play Week 1 against the Chiefs.

Fantasy Impact:

Harris has been out with an eye injury stemming from his July 4 fireworks mishap, sitting on the non-football injury list. Harris has been working on the sidelines with trainers for the past week-plus. The Chargers brought in Harris during free agency before spending a first-round pick on UNC RB Omarion Hampton. If healthy, he’ll at least be part of a committee in Los Angeles with Hampton leading the charge. Harris is currently RB41 on the consensus rankings.
